One-Fifth of New Enrollees Under Health Care Law Fail to Pay First Premium

WASHINGTON — One in five people who signed up for health insurance under the new health care law failed to pay their premiums on time and therefore did not receive coverage in January, insurance companies and industry experts say.

Paying the first month's premium is the final step in completing an enrollment. Under federal rules, people must pay the initial premium to have coverage take effect. In view of the chaotic debut of the federal marketplace and many state exchanges, the White House urged insurers to give people more time, and many agreed to do so. But, insurers said, some people missed even the extended deadlines.

I wonder how many of those were duplicates in the system. Wonder how many of those 2 million were multiple plans for people? Now we know that 80% actually paid. Still a ways to go to get to 7 million needed.

I wonder what the payment rates are outside of the half dozen geographically limited insurers mentioned in the article:
BCBS CA: 70% paid
BCBS Philadelphia: 84%
BCBS MN: 95%
Aetna: 70% paid
WellPoint: 76%
Humana: 75%
Health Care Service Corp (admin selling BCBS?): "around 80%"

My stats background is yelling at me, saying "this data isn't valid!".

At the end of the day, CMS has no clue (or refuses to tell us). "Averaging" data, offered by select insurers, suggests 80% have paid.

I am sure those stats will come out somewhere after a certain Tuesday in November.....

Some will come out before that if they are publicly traded companies. BCBS won't, but UHC, Humana, and Aetna will have to disclose some info.

the overall attrition rate will be interesting to see. Some just paid to get that big operation taken care of.

I like this new way to measure your achievements.
So far this month, I have talked to 45 people, which means I've made 45 sales.
I already feel better about myself!
