Penguin 2.0

I'm not gonna argue about backlinks at all since I know they're important. But I create Youtube tutorials for long tail phrases, get about 100 views per video and actually get clients out of it.

Which is the effective method of addressing the "what if there are 50 sites with quality content about coffee". There aren't fifty sites about the long tail terms and such, so might as well go after the easier targets. Most small businesses don't need the volume from the big ticket terms either.

Exactly; "how to upload a logo into a studiopress theme." Only 27 views on the video, but 2 clients. I'll take it.

and they call me the sick one.

Part of the challenge is that google is constantly changing what they're doing. It's not just a matter of mixing X, Y, and Z together, it's predicting what Google wants before they want it. The direct from Matt Cutts is clear, create quality content and google will reward you. In personal experience that works to a point, but wishing doesn't make it so.

Its really not that difficult. Google is always doing new things but they've always wanted the same thing. Just refer to the original page rank thesis.

You're saying "Its really not that difficult" to predict Google's mind? That's quite the fantastic claim. Maybe you can share your enlightenment with us simpletons.

Its not reading their mind josh its reading their thesis. They've always wanted the same thing. Its people that are always trying to figure out the next trick that lose. Align your links with what googles always wanted out of a link and its googles algorithim that plays catch up.

It is truly all about quality links. Spam links are on the way out. You must find backlinks from high pr relevant websites. What is the only way to do this that doesn't take a lifetime? Build your own sites. That way you control the links, the relevancy and the page rank. This is how all the big boys rank....

What kind of investment does it take?

Depends on what you are after. If you are chasing a national keyword, then budget $5000 upfront plus monthly hosting fees. If you are looking to rank a local site, you could get started with $1000 or less plus monthly hosting fees. (How much is one lead worth)

You should also be getting a variation of high pr links at the same time from social bookmarks, blog commenting, and especially web 2.0's.

And of course, you will need on page SEO.....

I have virtually shut down blog commenting and submitting articles to directories. And guest posting has been stopped.

I like the Web 2.0 idea. Here's one of them. It's nothing great, but it is all my content and I hope, as I slowly add content, within a year or two, it will be perceived by Google as relevant and the links will be half-decent. It is not a website designed to get any leads.
