Picking a Company Name

Think you should definatley talk with your accountant before incorporating vs a dba or just registering a trade name with DOI. If your not making enough money it will cost you more in the long run plus the extra book keeping.
But thats just my two cents.

If you plan on having an Internet presence, you may want to register a domain name (website name) first and use that name as your company name.

There are other threads on domain name selection. You may want to check them out.

Finding a name that can serve as both your domain name and your company name will make your marketing easier.

More on registering a domain name, a fundamental for any business today. Even if you don't plan on having an internet presence, consumers will still look for you there. If they don't find a web site, that will create some doubt. If they do find a website, but it belongs to someone else because you didn't register your domain...well, that could be worse.

Use a whois lookup provided by any of the registration services (e.g., enom.com/whois/whois.aspx) and see what is available. You may want to think about registering a few variations on your final business name - domain registration is inexpensive. Certainly register your actual business name, even if it is intolerably long. Make sure your domain is easy to say and type; if not, register a few abbreviated domains. You likely will end up using one of the domains for your email addresses - another place where your domain has to be said out loud and ultimately typed by someone.

I just got my license and I have not given any thought to picking a company name and now it's that time. What are the guidelines that a few of you have followed in selecting your company names ?

Wow, these are good advise. It's not very easy to think of a business name especially if the business is yours because we want it to be perfect. And this is business name or a domain name for your website. I mean, it's difficult enought to think of a good password that you can remember..lol.
