Anyone in NY and using progressive? Their rates are horrendous, i keep getting return quotes for 3800, 4700 for drivers with prior insurance around 1k.

that too, i had a few clients tell me why i inflated the price to make my commission because they checked online before.

progressive is like anti-broker

In Arizona they are great. I love them to death and I make less commission with them then about anybody else!

Why I work with them? They have great customer service, good claims, and really understand the client. I can call them the day an EFT needs to come out for a client and they can stop it. Only one I know of in the industry that can do that.

Since we have a good relationship they trust me enough to send clients to me. I would say I get probably 8-10 new clients a month from there call center.

Also, Drive and Direct have different rating systems. Prior Carrier, Claims History, and Credit all affect whether you are a better fit for drive or direct. I had a man in my office last week and we saved him $300 every 6 months to go through our agency versus progressive directly. About half the time agency in Arizona have the better rate.

Honestly, you choose who you want to represent. I know several agents in Arizona who don't push Progressive. I have to say in Arizona these agents probably are looking at the commission and saying that's not enough for me! Obviously in New York they may not be as competitive but in Arizona they are coming up with the best rates in my agency about half the time.

Don't forget they spend 550 million dollars on advertising!

If you work with Progressive they will work with you. I have a lot of sales reps come in my office and say we have superior products but when it comes to claims and customer service it doesn't work out. Progressive is a different kind of company and no matter what agencys may say I feel very comfortable making a smaller commission to know my clients are taken care of.

Im sure Progressive is competitive and great in other states, but for me i had their advertising marketing materials displayed and people come in for auto quotes.

Out of the 20 people i've written zero because the premiums are 3 times higher than other companies so i am now known as the agency with higher rates lol.

Need more auto carriers!

So stop quoting them and start quoting other carriers. Isn't that the advantage of being independent?

You can't survive with just Progressive even though their rates in VA are much better than in MD where I write most of my stuff. I just brought on a local non-standard that is a lot lower than Progressive. Check around it shouldn't be hard to find other non-standards to appoint you. You are in big trouble though if that's your only market, my preferred carriers are sometimes half of what Progressive would offer clients.

I understand your problem. I have a few preferred carriers myself that comeup with outrageous rates. A comparative rater is a good investment. I use EZLynx for personal lines. Even if I have someone come in to my office looking for a particular company, "I say Great", tell them a few good things about the company and then go on to tell them about the other great company's I work with. Telling them you have many options is a good set up for making a sale. I put their information in and tell them who the best rate is with. Many times they will be happy you found them the best rate and not worry about the rate they came in looking for.

A word of advice is to sell only company's you believe in, it will help you generate referrals in the long run and keep clients happy. Most independent agents are willing to help, so ask who they are doing business with and why they do business with them. Looking at their website is another good indication of what company's they are selling not just representing.

Well, I am in AZ also, and Progressive rates suck. I RARELY use them because many of my other carriers have better rates and better policies.

Progressive is a sub-standard carrier also, most of the other carriers reconize Progressive as a sub-standard carrier.

Ever read the policies?

And Yes, I usually ONLY write Progressive as a last resort due to the difference in commission. BUT thats my choice as a IA.

I will say, their computer system is one of the best! They have handed me clients, I have had more than a few people call me and say, Progressive told me you are my new agent, I dont have a clue who they are, log in and pull up their policy, I will be damned! there you are! HAHA.

ANOTHER Reason I dont use them besides commission, is they charge to run reports, no other carrier I have charges me for reports.

Progressive is a good carrier to have with any agency sure. Dont like their direct rates beating mine, but the motorcycle, and RV stuff is great to have. Rates are hit and miss though depending on the market you're after.
