As my upline and I were having a conversation about future goals, he told me to not even think of recruiting or building a team.

I've been doing this for a while now, and after breaking my foot I realized that if I want to sustain long term income it'll have to be more than just selling since an illness or something could prevent me from being out in the field.

I've done some research here and seems like lots of IMO's are against agents recruiting, is there a reason for this or is it them avoiding any competition?

What is "awhile"? Do you have a steady stream of renewal, 2k per month or more? Do you have appointments with top commissions with every company out there? If you answered NO the the last 2 ?'s then don't, you will get screwed and end up in debt.

then you might want to look at eventually transitioning in to selling over the phone and on the net....

Except selling over the phone is an animal unlike most, understand it or get eaten alive.

Are you intending to imply, with this statement, that there are other methods of selling an insurance product that one does not have to understand in order to use successfully?

I have followed a few agents in my day to help train... always surprised at how little some of them new the product... but what often surprised me more was how little they knew, or attempted to know their prospect.

By the time you retire as a ins. salesman, you should have a Phd in human behavior... if not, you just think you where a salesman.

Your upline sucks

He is being selfish. He invested a lot of time in me about 5 years ago, and he is the reason why I doubled my production. In five years, I've averaged 130k with an 81% persistency. With his spread he makes about 10 to 12k a year on me. 5 years and 50k later, haven't I paid my dues?

The problem you will have with building your own agency, is that your current production isn't enough to sustain a high enough contract so that you can offer agents street level.

The good news is that you do know the business and can recruit unlicensed agents. You can give them less than street, in exchange for their education. However, once they find this forum, they will assume they are being ripped off as they will read a lot of the nonsense and take it as truth.

You've paid your dues and you should do what you want!

Agencies that are actively recruiting on this forum, that don't want you to build your own agency, are doing that for a few reasons.

1. They are afraid of getting a reputation like NAA and other companies that push recruiting and MLM.
2. They do not want to create their own competition
3. The last thing they want is a down line agent finding this forum, then coming to them complaining about his/her commission level and not being able to do anything about it.
