Several Domain Names Pointed at One Site?

Is it a good idea to have several domain names pointed at one site?

From an SEO point of view, I don't think it will hurt but I doubt it will do much good.

In my opinion, spending a lot of time and money on SEO is a waste of both resources for most agents. Some agents are very good at it and devote sizable amounts of effort to getting people to visit their site... and I suppose for some the conversion factor justifies said effort.

I think for most agents, energy is better spent on direct marketing... calling, mailing, visiting, networking, seminars, and maybe (just maybe) on leads.

YMMV.

Find me here.

AL.....I respect you, and your opinion may be valid for the upper echelon type of clients, but most of the agents here don't deal with mr and mrs richie rich, so I got to say your off base here.

I might be off-base. No argument here. But explain to me from your perspective and experience why multiple domains leading to one site is going to make that big a difference?

Thanks,

Al

We're talking backlinks right?

1. backlinks will help get your site indexed/cached.

2. backlinks help search engines determine your ranking(s) for a given keyword.

look at yahoo, for many keywords, if you have more backlinks than your competition, you will out rank them.

3. If you could have the best content out there but without backlinks you will never get indexed or rank in the top 5 results.

Let me explain what I am trying to do. I have one website designed, well almost, for anyone looking online for construction insurance in Virginia, primarily to get contact info to call, or email, an agent.

I purchased 3 domain names from godaddy and want all 3 domain names pointed to this 1 site. The actual site is through Weebly.com.

I am not looking to only do insurance online, just have a prescense if someone types in "Virginia Contractors Insurance" into Google.

I'm going to agree with Al on this. I don't see how multiple domain names for a single site would help. Search engines wouldn't even know about 2 of the 3, unless you specifically marketed them individually, but then, that increased marketing effort on the original domain would probably do as much, if not more, good.

There are reasons for multiple domain names, such as frequent misspellings or slightly different versions so people don't go elsewhere. I doubt SEO is a good reason though.

P.S. Its been years since I've done SEO work and nothing is the same anymore. I'm open to someone telling me how I'm wrong on this.

According to the Google Keyword Tool, not many people are typing that phrase in.

Anyway, are you wanting to have those 3 domains ranking for" virginia contractors insurance" and pointing to your main site?

I guess I dont see the point, unless you'd care to elaborate.

Yes, that's what I thought you meant... having multiple domains and have them all end up at your main site/domain.

Unless you put some good content on each of these 3 new domains, I'm not sure how it will help you get a better SEO ranking nor how people are going to find the domains in the first place.

Maybe a better idea is to have separate content in each domain and not point them back to your original site?

I agree and understand YGMMoney's backlink argument but that's not what you are doing here. Also, I had read somewhere that Google is starting (or has started ) to discount backlinks and is concentrating on content... but I don't keep up with this SEO stuff the way many others here do.

I "work" to get people to my website by writing stuff like this in local rags. They didn't let me put in my link, but if people WANT to find you I've learned that they will pop your name or agency into Google and get you.

Maybe I should work more on SEO stuff, but I've had success just writing articles for local news outlets (see if you have a Patch in your area.) Writing an article is easier for me than trying to figure out the whims of the search engines. But... as always... YMMV.
