Show your age by posting a gadget kids today wouldn't understand

Edit: after rereading it and reading the coach's comments - it unfortunate, and yes they won but as the coach said they knew and agreed to the rules up front. Sounds like, as it is often in youth sports, It is the parents, not the kids crying. And only some of the parents. So no, they were never in the race for the trophy.

Ok, I guess I think it is f'd up that they were made to agree to those rules in order to play.

I think it is weak minded and I think it teaches both the boys, the girls, and @rousemark the wrong lessons.

@rousemark

After rereading the article and reading the coaches statement I agree with you. Everyone knew up front.

Unfortunately for their league it will likely be changed to coed. Which for rec is fine. For training and scholarships will hurt the girls more.

I understand. I also believe there was one winner. However, no victims. I am guessing the girls could teach the parents some sportsmanship leasons. A couple of the comments from a couple of the parents like 'horrendous' are a bit much for 5th grade ball.

Sounds like in the end they are and will get even more recognition for beating the boys. Good on um.

However, no victims.

Wow, I don't agree here.

The crime was these girls were forced to choose between playing an unwinnable situation or not playing at all.

The threat to take away their access to the court was coercion.

They won fair and square.

Don't look to make this partisan.

Think like a dad instead of someone looking for a political angle.

Coercion by who and why?

They won fair and square.

I don't think anyone has disputed that.

Don't look to make this partisan.

? . How am I or anyone else being partisan?

Think like a dad instead of someone looking for a political angle.

I think you are looking for something that isn't there.

I see this as a rules issue, a cool story about girls beating bigger, older boys. But a small story in their lives. Even smaller for those of us not involved.

As far as thinking like a dad? Dude, I have been thinking like a dad for over 50 years. No one here is remotely qualified to question that.

Two of my granddaughters played travel volleyball and softball. One of them got a full ride in shot put and hammer. Also a high-school coach. Competing against guys and winning is a big deal.

This is just a minor news story about a ball game involving 5th grade girls. I doubt they are worried about it.

Coercion by who and why?

you just aren't thinking this through… They were told they would no longer have access to a basketball court to play on or practice on unless they join the boys league.

It's the very definition of coercion: do this, or we take that away from you.

I understand.

I recently had that conversation with one of my kids about mandates.

I don't disagree with you. I am just not as invested as you are so you may be thinking I am 100% disagreeing. I am not.

That was the rule in place. In place for a while. The girls knew the rule. Decided to accept the rule and play. They kicked boy ass. My guess is they were a little disappointed about the trophy but moved on to pizza and talking about boys after. Now they are getting some low grade notoriety and probably on their local tv. The parents on the other hand are outraged at this horrendous event. I'll bet they aren't outraged enough to to join the city council or at least push for more gender neutral access.

Girls should absolutely have as much access to fields and courts as boys.

And so could the coaches.

I coached both my boys from T-ball to high school. Got suspended for one game for cussing out the other coach. My youngest son's last game of little league. He'll be 38 this year.

Been suspended for 26 years now. If I ever go back I'll have to sit out that one game.
