My first elemeatry school closed in 1975 and we moved to new state-of the-art thing for 75-76.

The playground at my old elementary school somehow survived into the 200's before being sold and sub-divided into McMansion building lots. I took my daughters there when they were 5 and 3 respectively, and I honestly couldn't let them play on anything. It was true: That playground was built for Navy Seal training. Monkey bars three stories high and a sliding board that towered over the monkey bars.

I would have let them play on the merry-go-round but the wood decking was rotted through and the metal handles rusted and broken with sharp edges coated in tetanus no doubt.

It looked like this, only it looked like it had been through the Dresden fire bombing ...

Boy, I'm glad I was born when I was born. I loved that playground.

I called that merry-go-round the "Terror-go-round" AKA "Wheel of Death"! Us 4th graders would be enjoying ourselves going round and round. Then some 6th grader (who was two feet taller and had already hit puberty) would come along and rev that thing up so fast you could feel the g-forces. Of course, you couldn't hold on anymore, so kids would go flying everywhere! Once I heard a grownup walking past the playground say "Look! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? A plane?" No, just a 4th grader getting off the merry-go-round!

This one made me legit laugh out loud .. I'm so glad I was born when I was.

This guy does a funny routine about this stuff. Your merry-go-round comment brought it to mind. He talks about playgrounds in this clip:
