Tired of selling insurance

I'm surprised noone has mentioned the oldest profession as a great stay at home money maker.

That could be something that might be a good fit for the underwear agents.

However, I think most of the guys on the board would have a difficult time building a large enough client base make a profit.

Their tendency would probably lean more toward providing large discounts or free demos and trial versions just for the opportunity to participate.

I think it is more of a girl thing, but a great idea.

Is it one you are going to further investigate? I'm sure there are plenty of agents here who would like to be a part of your fact finding team and assist with the research. :D

........ Are none of you doing multiple things? I own a plumbing company as well and have poured five years into that, but once again, I'm getting restless and looking to move into something else.

I have my hands in a couple of businesses and that has kept be from being as successful in insurance as I could have been. One of them I have been trying to get disengaged from. My son is a journeyman plumber and I have been trying to get him to get his masters and start his own business with me as a partner. Any advice on plumbing?

Well, I can tell you how I did it. I went the franchise route with a partner and I think it helped quite a bit since I knew nothing about plumbing and couldn't devote 100% of my time to it.

It takes quite a bit of money to get a good plumbing operation going because of the advertising involved to get the phones to ring. If you are willing to invest all your profits the first 5 years back into the business (besides paying your son if he is doing the actual work) than it can potentially be a really good gig long term.

Let me know if you actually do it. I can tell you all the mistakes that I made and the stuff I learned. I have a great operation going now and it will eventually make a lot more money than the insurance business, with a lot less work.

The oldest joke in the plumbing business.........

Thanks for the offer. I would like to talk to you sometime. I believe it is only a matter of timing until we do it. The current economic downturn may actually facilitate it if my son gets laid off. My son is 31 and has about 12 years of experience. He has the reputation of being the best plumber in a shop of about 20 guys and he has a lot of contacts with contractors for new construction. However, that business is obviously suffering. I also have a very good friend with a HVAC business in a rural adjoining county that gets a lot of calls for service work that he would refer to us.

What type of franchise did you buy? What part of the country are you located in?
