Touchy Subjects: Race and Gender when Selling Insurance

I used to sell cars and mortgages....same results when I tried to sell to Asians & Middle Easterners....NADA!

There is a very large South East Asian population in my area. They are _great_ clients. To start with their traditional funerals are very expensive. In the range of $25,000.00 to $60,000.00. These are starting numbers. Most adults are first generation so they have many of their homeland values still. As such the family takes the care of their elders very serious. The majority of the sales are to the insureds children. They buy permanent. $200 - $400 premiums are not outside the norm.

Like everyone else, Blacks and Hispanics are also good. Very family oriented and great as referral base. They thank you for helping them and will go out of their way to refer you. They want to help you.

Oh they will buy from 1 of their own, no problem!

True. My mate, Rob is a professional golf teacher trying to break into the Asian community for lessons. There was a pro up at a driving range that was Asian and a terrible instructor but as bad as he was had a lot of students because he was Asian. Rob became friendly with the Korean that owned the dry cleaners up the street. He would never take a formal lesson but he would occasionally play 9 holes with us and continually ask for pointers. If he was doing something wrong he would always ask me what he needed to fix. He would ride in the cart with me and chat up a storm. I would just parrot what Rob told me over the years with my game. I asked him why he didn't ask Rob for pointers and he said that women are the boss. He was quite serious. He has had some Middle Eastern students but they didn't last very long.

Every culture is different.

Sooooo....what ur saying is, you're offering "How to sell to the Asian client base" lessons?

How much? Only about 5% of my DM leads are from them, so it better be cheap, lol!

You need to break into the Asian client base and they will ask a lot of questions especially with pricing. When Rob was selling golf equipment most of the other reps would avoid them. Rob found them to be a pain in the neck because they always had one or two "experts" with them and then tried to negotiate price. BUT he built a good client base with them - made big sales with good commission when they finally made up their mind and they sent their friends to see him only.

Very cheap. Since that 5% is worth zip, zero, nada. You give them to me. I write them and then you see how happy I am and you then want to be happy to. So it cost you nothing to learn to be happy. Well, you could also buy me a beer and lunch. ;)

yeah Ive heard something like that....but for me its no big deal. I dont need to get into that market, its too time consuming & unnecessary. I have plenty of white, black & english speaking hispanic ppl to target.

I do have 1 Asian client now Im doing a term policy with, he was declined with RNA term....now with Foresters S/I. But he mustve asked me 10 times "is Canadian company ok?" And Ive been working this case since the beg of Jan.

Women do have advantage in sales, but we talk too much that a lot of times we may talk sales out of ourselves. Also we are not as aggressive as men. The main decision maker when it comes to purchasing insurance for the family, is the woman. We should support each other. Women like to buy from men.

I'm from Africa and I got accent I hope Americans will trust me lol. I think Middle Eastern and Asian would buy more from a Caucasian person than Black or Latino. It should be all about the human race. After all, we were created by one God! God is great.
