What dental plan do you have?

Union Plus has discounted dental plans. It's free to join. Page past the stuff that covers all the Unions that are eligible and get to the part that says not in a union? Join working America. They offer tons of discount. They have a phone app so if I am out it will tell me who offers discounts. Applebees and legoland are two I have recently used. A lot of members use the health/dental. It's free to check out.

The reason that NON-group dental plans have never been very good is...
100% of the people who buy them, use them. No one buys an individual dental plan and doesn't go to the dentist. Insurance doesn't work if everybody goes on claim.

it's just like when they sold individual pregnancy insurance. Everybody who bought it was trying to have a baby. That's why it was crazy expensive.

Dental plan premiums cost about the same as two cleanings per year and one set of x-rays. And they generally cover... Two cleanings a year and a set of x-rays. They usually have a discount benefit beyond that on other services but when you have a dental plan you usually have to go to a small network of dentists.

they can't really invent individual dental plans that cover much more than the cost of the basic services. It's not like cancer insurance where a lot of people that buy it will not get cancer. Or car insurance where a lot of people will pay their premiums for years without wrecking their car.

Depends on the premium. But the benefits can't be much over the premium charged. Because the only profits they could make is the amount of discount from the providers that they could negotiate.
But I'm open to someone changing my mind if they have other information. I've been ask for a good dental insurance plan 582 million zillion times over the last couple decades. I would love to have a great one to offer.

Dental plans have the least amount of benefit available, but what you said wasn't accurate. Manhattan Life has a Pool of Money. that you can use for dental(major services after 12 months, or vision, or hearing aids or a combination of the 3.

Newby i saw on another thread you said you smoke? Got to kick that habit . For Rx's Good Rx is incredible . On many medicines its cheaper than the copay of an rx plan. This is the problem Independent agents face with health and dental ins. Many family Health plans are $1500-$2000 a month. I have no idea how an independent agent with these mlm co's making 50-80% can survive after all these exp's. I guess they sell the dream of recruiting a big downline and tons of overides.

No I don't smoke. I never needed to look that cool. What I was saying in the other thread was the telemarketers call and pitch me (ignoring the DNC list of course) I usually tell them I do. Because about half of the pre-screeners (the one before you get to the recorded line) will try to coach you that you don't smoke. Several of the actual agents will keep "forgetting" that you smoke. They try to close you as a non-smoker.

Re for suckers.

I think that may depend on a combination of the state of your teeth, the nature and cost of the dental insurance, and whether or not you view dental insurance as having a risk component.

Most of the discussions of dental insurance I have seen here seem to suggest that dental insurance is a failure if it's cost is not completely recovered in services during the course of a year. (I may not be interpreting comments I have read correctly.) It seems to me that view ignores the idea of insurance covering risk.

The reason it ignores the concept of risk is because dental insurance doesn't cover much risk. I could almost say "any" risk, because most people would not feel that $1000, $1500, or $2500 represents a true risk to their financial security.
Most dental plans pay a paltry $1k or $1500 in benefits. Some go as high as $2500, and I even saw a $5k plan a while back. (not sure what the fine print was on that though)

Because consumers aren't mitigating a risk, they're really just buying these plans to cover anticipated needs for dental work. So I think you're reading the situation correctly: if your premium dollars aren't completely recovered by the dental services you received, you more or less wasted your money.

That being said, what I feel are the best plans out there are Medico, GPM, and Ameritas. They at least cover Implants, while almost every other plan does not.
