What is the Big Deal About Blue Cross?

Can anyone explain to me why so many seniors (at least in Iowa) think that Blue Cross has some kind of holy status and that the Blue Cross med supp pays way better than the other med supps and its very risky to have any other carrier than Blue Cross? People are drinking this lemonade and don't care if they have to pay more for their monthly premiums, their friends and relatives have all warned them "never give up your Blue Cross supplement..." Shaking my head, I just don't get it...

I have run across that before, had one this week in fact. Not sure exactly why there is a cult following for BCBS, only thing that I can think of is they had that name on their insurance card most the their lives, all through their working years, so they just trust the name.

Mostly because we have all been insured by BCBS at some point in our lives. Most of them had BCBS right before Medicare and the transition is natural.

That and when they call their doctor's office and ask, the girls will say:

A. BCBS
B. AARP

I spoke to a lead tonight that I had purchased and the lady swore that she had had other med supplements who "would not pay her claims" and so she switched back to Blue Cross and "she will never change again!" I hear this over and over and I just don't believe that other supplements are not paying people's claims. I have certainly never had any clients who encountered that.

The older they get, the less they like change.

I'm always hearing, " I've carried BCBS for 20 years. I can't let it go now, I've got too much invested in it."

Or, "my hospital bill was $90,000 and AARP paid every bit of it."

When they get that nonsense in their head, it's hard to get them to listen to reality.

Seniors are also VERY reluctant to change to another company as Blue Cross MedSupp premiums escalate. In IL, they increase at a much steeper curve than every other carrier, and don't stop increasing at age 85, like some company MedSupps do.

Medical providers like IL BCBS because the billing and treatment authorization codes are always at their fingertips.

I like selling BCBS MedSupps because there are no health questions...everyone is approved. Lower commissions (10%), but less hassle. At this stage of my career, less hassle is more important than more money.

Now that I think of it, I think my grandpa has Bcbs and lives in Iowa, pays a bunch, around 300 or more for his Medsupp but loves it. It's paid well and he can afford it.

I don't know of any Med Supp companies that stop raising premiums at 85, but I agree with you that many seniors won't change from BCBS even though you can save them $75 or more per month for the same coverage. For double the commissions, I'll take the extra hassle.

I finally picked up BCBS last year because they're GI. As high as they are, they're still quite a bit less than some of the older MOFO supplements and they're the only alternative because of health problems. I only use them as a last resort.

I also refuse to write BC and only right them as a last resort. I could care less about hassle or commissions and my boycott of BC is my way of protesting this near monopoly that BC has on the seniors of this country who are are too fearful and mistrusting to listen to the independent agents who can save them money. And the Farm Bureau is a part of that cult as they sell BC products exclusively to the farmers and that ilk who think that FB agents are the only agents they can trust. HA!
