What is the Big Deal About Blue Cross?

I am appointed with BX but have no idea when I last wrote a policy with them.

Had a conversation just this morning with a lady, T65, and wanted to know which carrier I liked best. Aetna, BX, MOO or Humana.

Told her I am appointed with all of them but didn't recommend any.

She ended up buying New Era.

Not familiar with New Era....how do their rates compare with the others?

This is normal. What were really competing with is the status quo.

Your follow up marketing (Drip) should be dealing with this.

Have you had anyone switch from BSBC yet?

Were they scared to change initially?

How are they benefiting from their new plan now?

You're clients that switched can be your allies!

Using testimonials in your follow up campaigns can chip away at their reluctance to switch.

Sure, there's plenty of low hanging fruit out there, but I think these people just need a little more faith that what you're saying is true.

Build social proof by using third party references in your regular follow up.

It might eventually bring them around someday!

I am not appointed with them but I do help a lot of people change from them due to high price increase

I just had one that went from $98 to $149 in 2 years

During AEP had one that went from $180 to $368 in 5 years

In Georgia they are competitive and have a history of reasonable rate increases. They sell in Iowa under the Philadelphia American name. They don't look too competitive there though.

I spoke to a lead tonight that I had purchased and the lady swore that she had had other med supplements who "would not pay her claims" and so she switched back to Blue Cross and "she will never change again!" I hear this over and over and I just don't believe that other supplements are not paying people's claims. I have certainly never had any clients who encountered that.

If their doctor is a Participating Provider (96% of all Dr.'s) then they do not even bill the Medigap plan. Medicare becomes their One-Stop billing source. (CMS form 460) The Dr. bills Medicare, Medicare pays their 80% and notifies the Medigap company on the rest that is due. The timeliness of payment from the Medigap insurer contractual with Medicare and because the Doctors office is fined (up to $10,000) if they try to bill the beneficiary or indicate money is due, it is highly unlikely the Medicare beneficiary would ever receive any information regarding bills due.

Are you talking about BCBS or New Era? I find it hard to believe if you're talking about New Era. At least on their Modernized plans (those issued since June 2010).

According to New Era's rate increase chart, the highest rate increase for any of their carriers on Modernized plans was 9.75% in TN for 2013.

New Era

This What I've been told, I mean if the one during aep was off by a year thats not uncommon for a senior but the prices are correct

This One "I just had one that went from $98 to $149 in 2 years"

I just closed today was SC deal the other was MO

Something doesn't add up. Rate increases in South Carolina for New Era are as follows:

2011
Plan F - 8%
Plan G - 6%

2012
Plan F - 0%
Plan G - 0%

2013
Plan F - 8%
Plan G - 6%

2014
Plan F - 8%
Plan G - 8%

So it would be impossible for a rate to go from $98 to $149 in 2 years.

I could be wrong, but I don't thing New Era/Philadelphia American offers a Med Supp in MO. At least not according to the MO DOI website Medigap Rate Guide | Missouri Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions & Professional Registration. And there are no rates listed on Ritter's quote engine for New Era/Philadelphia American in MO.
