I think the places listing SEO is something people would pay for, not necessarily because its impossible to do, but even if you know how to do it pretty well its very tedious.

It has to be mostly hand done and it requires knowing where to do all the work.

a citation seems like a fancy word for backlink to me...

It's sort of like a version of a backlink. A citation references your business name, address, and phone number.

I think I'll take y'alls advice, and put up a free offer in the offers section. This is a great idea, will give me some training, will give somebody a free Google Places listing, will get me some testimonials, too. Good suggestion!
