Re: Becoming a health insurance agent

There are some really good points here! I specifically like how you give advice on how what to do if you have just been licensed.

Hi Forum!
I am so glad I "happened upon" this site a few days ago.
I just got my Georgia Life/Health License today! And I am so psyched!

I know that this statement has been said over and again. But it still remains Verifiably True - This Forum is Awesome and quite informative. I have learned so much in the past couple days. All of you Gurus are very knowledgeable and worthy of great success in your lines of business. I hope to establish a relationship on this site and sit in your shadows to acquire the vast knowledge shared here. Thank you soooooo much!

I do have some questions:

1) In advising the Newbees - several have said to stay away from bought leads and do cold calling...What are some good sources of lists that comply with Do Not Call Registries?

2) I have read some about the chargebacks - if you get a chargeback, do they garnesh that from what you are presently producing, take from a savings pool, how does that work?

3) When you get appointed...do the carriers have production quotas? If so, what happens if that quota is not met?

Thank you again for your insights! They are most appreciated. :)

What kind of insurance do you plan to sell?

Josh, MedicarePlanSolutions is a good guy to get lists from.

In my experience if you get a charge back it will be deducted from your commission check. (I haven't had one in years and years.)

Production quotas usually only come into play if you are getting a substantial above street commission. I don't think it is something you will need to concern yourself with.

There are some who you can get an above street level commission and still not have production requirements.

1. It's really up to you if you want prospect or get warm leads? It also depends on what you plan to sell product wise? To me, time is money so I prefer to buy leads and get referrals off the sales after they get the product.

2 & 3....it aaaaall depends on what you sell, who you work for and what THEY (your upline) expect from you. To general of questions to give you an honest, what-to-expect answer.

A the end of the day, your "quota" should be to put food on your table, be able to pay your bills and create a retirement income. If you're not motivated but just that alone, any quota put into place won't do squat for you or your upline. Not saying you're not motivated. Just stating that it's amazing the many bonus's, contest etc... I have to come up with just to motivate someone to do what we do? Sell!

My advice at the end of the day is do what you are comfortable with. What you know you can achieve. What you are passionate about and go straight to the source for answers. Listen to others "advice". But don't take it as 100% gospel. You will get hurt.

Good luck!

Hi John,

I hope you are still around on this blog to answer some of my questions. Before I start, I will have to tell you that I know nothing about the insurance industry. I have been in the IT industry for years. Since I was let go because of the economy, I vowed to never to go back into the IT industry ever again if I can help it. I was recently contacted by an AllState recruiter who is selling me the idea of becoming their exclusive agent. I am seriously thinking about joining the insurance industry. However, I have done my homework and it seems most people's perception is to run away from AllState. Every where I looked people seems to be happy as an independent agent. I live in Texas and I need to get my license if I want to pursue. What school I can enroll to begin my training for it. I know I have to pass the exam and I am not worried about it. I just need to know what steps I need to begin to get my license and then hopefully to become an independent agent afterward. This way I don't have to be miserable with just one company whether it is AllState, Farmers, State Farms, etc... I sincerely appreciate all your help. BTW, I don't have any friends or family members in the insurance business so I don't know whom to go for advise. Sincerely.
