Best Way To Build My Business As A New Agent

I have just passed my L, A & H State License Exam. I have researched several companies. I have one offer to sign a contract. Before I sign, are all agencies pretty much going to offer the same thing. Great training, great materials, office support, and my own Producer mentor? They've been around for a hundred years but what am I missing?

What are we missing? Oh yeah...who are you referring to?:err:

Physicians Mutual

I spent 2 years with them about 15 years ago. They tried to go semi captive, but it didn't last long. Wide variety of products. Production based marketing program. In the right office you might get good training.

With that being said...I don't think they have as many products now and being captive, they don't pay that well. I didn't need training...out of the two branches I worked at, one had training...the other didn't. They have a known name because of their mail order marketing and they used to do T.V. advertising.

If you need training, you might have to go captive for a while. I'd recommend them over any of the Torchmark companies(I was with Globe Life/United American before PMIC) or Bankers Life.

Good stuff. I feel comfortable with them. But what do I know yet. I figured being captive would give me a solid training year. They said they're pushing med sups real hard. Should I focus on just one or two specific policy areas? And get good at selling them? I naturally fit into one of my target markets. 50+ and those nearing Medicare. But I would love to focus on young professionals in their late 20's/ early 30's too.

PMIC can cover all ages. I guess they're pushing an Innovative Plan F Medicare Supplement now that I don't like. I'd stay away from that...not a good buy. They have a wide range of products...even annuities. Take a look at their product line and make sure they have products you want to offer. I'm sure the same products they had when I was there have changed.

Good luck.

You're wanting to go Captive?

Oh great,

another Dave...

Um, well from what another Dave told me, learn to prospect and prospect well. All you should be doing right now is gaining potential clients.

Hello,

I am in the process of getting my Life / Health license and wanted to ask a question. What is the best way to BUILD my business starting out?

Thanks
Dave Wolfe

Do, and sell, what you enjoy. It will be much easier. Don't go into debt buying leads, joining associations, etc. Being in debt brings with it a lot of stress, and stress will show up in your presentations. Most agents fail and the owners of the associations and lead companies are getting rich off of your credit card as you are broke and doing something else trying to pay it back.

1. Ask lots of questions as there are a few decent people on this forum who will help you out.
2. Learn to cold-call!
3. Work a solid day. Don't spend the entire day preparing to work.
4. Learn that if you don't give someone the opportunity to tell you NO, then they can't tell you YES.
5. DON"T SELL YOUR FAMILY!!! A monkey can do that. Learn to sell to strangers and referrals.

Just my opinons.

Even though you're running monkeys down, good post.

Get your life, health, series 7 and 66. Even if you never sell securities, People respond better to a financial advisor than a life insurance agent.
