Buying or Renting your Leads?

EFES resells leads up to 60 days old for $12, up to 364 days old for $8, etc. Since they're not reselling them at full price like the aforementioned example, what do you think about that @Newby ?

(Full disclosure: I have bought the .25c "moldy" leads from them a couple of times.)
These leads have been previously sold to an agent and are not just excess inventory that was not sold? If so, how do they know the agent has not worked them and made a sale in the house?

That's partly why I like having my contracts direct with the carrier if possible, although that's mostly impossible these days. So, I spread my contracts across a few IMO's. I'm a true independent, and pretty set against becoming captive with any company or IMO, especially just to save a few bucks on leads. I prefer to self generate and stay in control of the lead and the who, what when, where, why, and how the lead is sold, even if it costs me a bit more.

They have excess leads that have never been sold, but they cost more. The ones I'm talking about have been previously sold. They call them "bonus" leads.

I wish @Ryan Caras would come in on this conversation and explain the hows and whys of their program for the sake of discussion. (That being said, let me make it perfectly clear that I enjoy working those "moldy" .25c leads!)

Sure not a problem

The Excess leads are leads that have never been sold to an agent. This is just inventory that an agent stuck us with and we didn't find a new home for them.

The Bonus leads that are VERY OLD (5+ years) you will see has a HUGE inventory amount. That was because years ago we would resell your leads as bonus leads since we had the discounted lead program. The newer bonus leads are leads put in there from any agent that stuck us with some sort of lead debt or carrier debt. We take any leads they had bought from us (remove any sales) and then resell those leads to try and recoup some of our income we had to pay towards their debt.

Just think about it, we sell THOUSANDS of leads every week. If we resold ALL leads as bonus leads, those categories would have 20x more inventory available (like the older categories have).

So again, we do NOT resell leads unless an agent rolls debt to us of some sort (which any IMO should do).

We have several hundreds of agents on standing weekly lead orders. They all have access to the shopping cart. They would know instantly if we were reselling their leads in there :)

ROI had to be pretty sweet though.

We actually have our team building a consignment option inside of our Lead Portal. This will give our agents an option to select leads THEY OWN and have them added to the Shopping Cart for a percentage. It will make more leads available to the outside agents to purchase but also allow agents to make a little money back from leads they purchased.

So if a lead gets resold with this system (once it is live), it would have been the person that bought it that is choosing to resell it, not us.

Thanks, Ryan! Great answers, as I expected!

What's cool about the super old .25c leads is, as @Ryan Caras mentioned, is the very large inventory available. I actually don't expect to sell a large percentage of those, since a lot of them have moved or died by now. I use them to generate debit prospects in the appropriate neighborhoods. I doorknock them, then knock the neighbors. So being able to get 100 or more leads in a single zip code (in the inner city) maximizes my face time since they're all in close proximity. I work these as I have extra time available. Several months ago I ordered a few hundred of these in 4 or 5 city zip codes. I'm not even 1/10 of the way through them, but I've actually sold a couple directly to the actual person on the lead, and about 7-8 of the neighbors. I've also gotten referrals from a couple of them. My acquisition cost per sale on those ends up being just a buck or two, if that.

That is the golden idea right there. I've said that for years if someone would make an e-bay for used leads where people could list and sell their own leads it would be a gold-mine. Because it's something of value that there are definitely buyers and sellers out there but no system to put them together.

The only downside is it's going to be heavy on the agent-killers. But you have to expect that on used leads.
