Unless each domain goes to a different site with unique content, the duplicate content penalty is probably going to get all of the domains except the primary one pulled from search engine results. If you think people will type in the domain name, go ahead and buy it. But if SEO is your focus, put your time and money elsewhere. Keywords in the domain is an important factor, but it's only one of many.

So what I gather then is it would be more beneficial to have a handful of good "key word rich" domains ending in .com with little overlap in in "key words" then a pile of the others with over lapping "key words.

I think I understand now.
