.com Vs .net and So On.

I have designed website and done web related work for years and let me express how important that the .com is.

Dont even consider a .net.

Charity quotes please "express how important" the .com is vs. one of the others.

Again, I couldnt tell you the last time I searched and typed www.anything.com. I type what I am searching for such as insurance forums and hit enter. I could care less what the dot is. It sounds like Newby and Chumps do the same and I would assume do what I do after that. Start clicking down the list until they find what they are looking for?

After clicking two or three sites in the list if I don't see what I am searching for I rearrange the words in my browser and maybe ad or delete a word or two to try and make my search more specific.

As I have stated earlier I am an *** when it comes to this and I am trying to wrap my head around how and why it works. Im not looking to be a pro or do this myself just trying to understand a little. So please tell me why .com is more valuable and why I shouldnt consider the others. Especially if all my .nets, .info's, .orgs all direct to my 10 year old .com which as far as I can tell hasnt produced enough business to pay for one year of it's existance let alone 10 years. I can buy 11 "key word rich" .info's for the price of 1 .com. Please tell me why I should buy the .com at ten time the price?

As an example this site which is insurance-forums.NET is number 1. insurance-forums.COM is number 6. This site came up first on the list and I clicked it. If I didnt like what I saw I would have clicked on the next one in line.

First thing when I think about a website address is .com

I know it will be www. something here .com

I think you should always go with .com

OK let's put it this way. Lets say you want the domain name www.booger.com but it's already taken so you opt for www.booger.net

If I type booger in my address bar and control + enter it's going to take me to www.booger.com and it doesn't matter how many times I've gone to www.booger.net it's still going to take me to .com.

If I just put booger in the address bar on my i-phone, it's going to booger.com

And even though this forum is hugely popular, I guarantee you the guy that owns www.insurance-forums.com gets some free traffic from people trying to get here.

Interesting points...and I don't want to make a big issue out of it...but who presses control plus enter? I never have. Nobody I know ever has. Of course, maybe we are sheltered.

Regardless...it all comes down to how the site is built and what type of work is done to drive traffic. If done right, the .net is just fine.

Newby I get that part and I also understand the 800 vs. 888 analogy and on that point I agree and understand. An 800 holds more weight then an 888 and I understand that a .com is the most recognizable of the dots.

Like you my main domain is agency specific and is the name of my agency.com.

So let me ask it this way. How many people are searching using newburyfinancial.com when looking for life insurance? Some I am sure that know who you are, have been referred or know your site. But if a person is looking in general in the Henderson, KY area for a planner, life or health agent wouldnt they goggle Henderson ky life insurance? or Henderson, KY insurance or Henderson, KY insurance agents and so on?

So if I understand what some have said on other posts and you want a "key word rich" domain wouldnt hendersonkentuckylifeinsuranceagent .net, .info be ok? and if the objective is to have many key word rich domains as possible directed to your site wouldnt the .nets and so on be better so you can get more and have more combinations? Especially since they are directed to the main domain? Or am I off base?

Still think that the average prospect is more inclined (sub-consiously) to assume it is .com versus .net, so branding plays factor into it. Most will assume it is dot com if the only thing they can remember is the domain name (less extension).

I'm old school. My web site is basically a brochure not a lead generator. I market through direct mail. The mailings just have my website so people can check me out.
I don't know anything about driving traffic that is web searching.
