DI for Doctors

Disability Income has been around longer then Health Insurance. If your working with Doctors and like professionals do yourself and your clients a favor and work with High-Line Companies like Guardian or UM/Provident Life. I don't know if NW Mutual or NYL will broker there DI.

Check Out Guardian's Disability Buy Sell Polices for your Doctors involved in a Partnership or LLC Practice.

I wouldnt sell Unum to a dog. The class actions suits, the reports on 60 Minutes, the outright collusion to deny claims by disabled physicians. Enough is enough. They have caused a lot of pain in this world. They were a good company at one point but those days are over. Sure, they have cleaned up their act lately, thanks to all the court orders.

20 years ago? I was fearless and thought DI was for pansies.

What are your thoughts on Union Central?

I have never been afiliated with Union Central, but I have come in contact with many agents that have. I have only heard stellar feedback about the company and its products. Especially good feedback on the DI, but that is not my thing. I know they have merged companies in 06, (with Ameritas and Acacia), now called UNIFI Mutual Holding Co., so not sure what has happened since then.

The home offc is in the suburbs of Cincy, OH, and I have driven past the headquarters 100 times, over the years. Impressive patch of ground, as is the case with many life cos.

I've used PFG recently for a specialist who wanted a rather large monthly DI policy. I've not been disappointed dealing with them thus far, they seem to really be on the ball. The commission is crappy, so it must be a good policy.

Or is the comm just crappy because you are brokering the product, and thus only getting a sliver of the pie...? I'm not sure that low comm. equals good product in all cases; in fact I am sure that it doesn't. But PFG is a good company, I do know that.

Just joking, low commission definitely doesn't mean a better policy. I figured that you knew that, but didn't want anyone new to get the idea that was a serious assumption.

Commission differences between GA contracts is so wide on life, DI, and supplemental health products it's ridiculous.

We looked over several carriers in detail and this one was the best fit for what the client wanted, and just happened to be the lowest commission available to me of all the current contracts.

It has been a long time since I have looked at anything to do with PFS but they were one of the cos that used the "career agent" format... Comms were relatively low on products but then bonuses and other spiffs brought the total comp up to about what a typical GA (non career agent format) comp was.

For those that aren't in the loop of the "career agent" format, and just brokering the same product, comp is way low compared GA comp via a competitor company and similar product. Suffice it to say that their method is to "bring you into the fold of career agents", with offers of mur and frankincense...

I assume you are talking about Principal, PFG. They have been very easy to work with and my comp is similar to other disability carriers.

FYI NYL doesn't have a DI product. Agents have to broker with other companies for this.

I am working on another DI case with them right now, the others have been approved, pending 2008 income.

The reason that I've stuck with them is certainly not commission 50/5, but mainly because of their reputation, and the people that I'm placing have their health and life with me.

If someone can tell me of a better carrier, as far as CS, Payment of claims, etc. then I would have to look further.

My biggest concern on these DI cases is what could happen.

I have a current life client living off of two DI policies that pay him $13,000 per month to age 65.

The carriers are Standard and Unum, written before my time.
