Do people naturally avoid salesmen?

Nope. They certainly don't avoid me. If anything, I have way more family and friends that call me now, since I became a broker. Also, the fact that I'm a broker, I really don't consider myself a "salesman," per se. I think there's a big difference between an in-house agent (that has to push certain products) and a broker (who has many different products and companies to choose from). I don't care who they go with, as long as it solves their problem. The way I see it, I simply solve problems. I also make people aware of problems they didn't know they had, and might end up saving their financial life, down the road.
