Am I out of my mind in even thinking I could do this part time and be successful?

NO! I sold 40-50 policies a month for a State Farm office, while I was a full time college student my senior year! Now with that said, I had a great support system from a local office (did all my quotes), worked primarily internet leads (the agent paid for), and when people wanted to be seen in person, I set appointments that that the agent mostly went on, because my schedule did not allow it. Bottom line is, you could be very effective selling over the phone in the insurance industry, but it all depends on what the office or company is expecting you to do.

I could not have done this without the help of a good office backing me!
