I just got turned on to this site (not sure what took so long) and hope I can help on this topic. There is a lot of information online that explains the basics of search optimization. Do a google search for "SEO Basics - a knol by aaron wall". The information may be more in-depth than you are looking for but it is a good overview of the things search optimization professionals use.

I assume most of the SEO gurus will tell you to focus on terms like "New Jersey Homeowner's Insurance" or "NJ Homeowner's Insurance," etc...

Anotherwords...something more localized.

Yep something that people can relate in your area. Just to be specific and start from there.

Try putting these buying keywords into your keywords. For example use "best florida health insurance" not "florida health insurance." Go after 3 to 5 keywords per page then you will do better. You want a minimum of 5 searches per day and less than 100,000 competitors putting the keywords into quotes. "best florida health insurance" You can rank really quick by going after those type of keywords. Then go after the big keywords after you rank high for the lower keywords.

For example I am ranked #13 on google for the terms school bus stop safety. I am normally #1 but I haven't done any link building since starting my classifed ads company. I compete with over 13 million sites. It has taken me 5 months to get that site ranked in the top 20 of google. I ranked #1 after the first week on a lesser searched keyword.
