There has been a lot of talk about how to get the best ranking on Google and about SEO.

I've not seen meta name talked about. You can embed a html code on your website that tells the web crawler what your website is about and put keywords on your website.

My web designer did this for me on my 1st couple of websites.

I've made a couple new websites by hand using just html programing and I'm having to make up my own meta name html code. This tells the webcrawler about my website and how to crawl it.

Does anyone have any feedback on which keywords to add or how to improve a meta name code?

I'm learning a lot from HTML Meta Element. I didn't think I could every make my own html codes, but I'm doing it.

I think that meta name is a trick to get your websites on more search engines.

That information is dated at least in regard to how much impact it has on search engines. The big three (Google, Yahoo! and MSN) are much more sophisticated now. The other search engines have such a small market share that they are almost irrelevant.

Search engines revisit websites based on how often those sites generate new content. They ignore any meta tag that tells it how often the content is refreshed.

The title tag is still relevant. The description is still relevant, but only because the content of that tag shows up on the SERPs. The rest of the meta tags, with the possible minor exception of the keyword tag, are not relevant at all.

The other meta tags were once used by the search engines, but that was a long time ago.

Today the search engines are super sophisticated and read your website's content to determine what is is about. Properly using heading tags, anchor text, and title tags help a lot, but there are no quick and easy ways to get your web site ranked.

You've got to do a lot of things right to get a website to rank well regardless of the age. There are only 10 first page spots for a given keyword on a given search engine.

You can turn an established site around more quickly, but a new site could take a year to rank well for competitive keywords even if you are doing a lot of things right.

Three months is probably the bare minimum for mortals. If CNN or Macy's developed a new site, I'm sure that it could be done much faster.

What about a sitemap? I just made a sitemap and submit it to google.

It says it will help them. What you think?

I tried to make a site map, I submitted it and had some errors on it.

I'm going to have to figure it out. I allowed it to auto dectect everything.

I guess I need to do some manual work on the sitemap.

Some search engines will use the meta description in their search results next to your listing. Having a good description can help your link get clicked on in a search results page, but it won't help your site show up in search results.
