I tried to make a site map, I submitted it and had some errors on it.

This is a no charge way to make a sitemap.

Took about 15 seconds.

So what about widgets?

Are these things just "pretty", or do the build traffic?

Sitemaps are important and you can use them to tell the search engines what to crawl as well as what not to crawl Much like you can using a simple robots.txt file linked to in your header that points to the file by that name on your ftp server.

Widgets are links to other sites. Some provide news, others links to nonsense such as games or music.

Just trying to figure out if they have real value or just something to look pretty.

Mostly they will just look pretty. They actually can give the company/developer a back link from your site depending on how they are embedded.

Search engines a far more sophisticated then they were years ago. With that being said your meta tags have very little to do with your site ranking well.

However, you should always make sure that you include a description on each page that entices propects to visit your site.

Also, every website should have a HTML and XML sitemap one's for vistors and both are for bots and will aid in getting your entire site indexed. There's alot more to SEO than just adding Meta Tags and Sitemaps.

Quite true, although some can contain a link to the vendor/creators site and that gives them a back link from an external site that points back to their site. This works well for sites that give free things such as widgets, or templates away for free. It can be an SEO advantage for the site that creates the widget but it will have no effect SEO wise for the person that uses the widget on their site. The only possible advantage you could really hope to gain is that your site visitors stay for a few seconds longer staring at your widget and that your visitor bounce rate (how long they stay on your site) improves. The longer they stay on your site the more important the search engines will think your site is.

I concur wit motoxx. Widgets are the easiest way to get links to your site. Just create popular widget for your niche and offer it for free. A lot of agents, bloggers, etc will put in on their site and you will receive thousands of links and even from related websites! And links are the most important thing to get ranked well...
