Senators approve health insurance amendments | TheHill

The Senate on Thursday approved a pair of amendments aimed at improving transparency on health insurance.

Senators in a 56-44 vote approved an amendment from Tim Scott (R-S.C.).

Scott said ahead of the vote that his amendment would "make sure that insurance companies increase the transparency on the actual cost of the health insurance tax on monthly premiums."

It creates a deficit-neutral reserve fund to increase awareness during health insurance billings of any ACA tax included in monthly premiums.

Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin (W.Va.) and Michael Bennet (Colo.) broke rank and voted with Republicans. Manchin is from a state that leans to the GOP, while Bennet is up for reelection in 2016 in a swing state.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) urged her colleagues to vote no on the amendment, saying it would mean "patients and families get skewed, incomplete information about their health care costs."

Senators also passed an amendment, from Democratic Sens. Ron Wyden (Ore.) and Murray, that requires insurers to explain benefits under the Affordable Care Act.

"Many of the Affordable Care Act's greatest successes are getting lost in the noise of political attack adds," Wyden said ahead of the voice vote. "This amendment would require insurers to disclose all of the benefits afforded to consumers through the Affordable Care Act."

Does anyone know if there is a certain amount of time someone needs to reside in an expanded Medicaid state in order to qualify for Medicaid?

I came across this story Despite protests at Capitol, Insure Tennessee dies again | Local News | Times Free Press describing the intense emotions from seriously ill, impoverished people in Tennessee who don't earn enough income to qualify for subsidized Marketplace insurance.

If sick/needy people in non-Medicaid expansion states relocated to an expansion state, could they immediately enroll in Medicaid?

If so, all that person needs to do is take up residency in a homeless shelter in one of those states and have a Navigator-Assister enroll him/her on Medicaid.

Usually, the fear of dying activates an intense will to live. The folks described in the above article are just crying and protesting. Maybe they're not really as sick as they're pretending to be.

That is exactly what happened in TN when Tenncare was originally rolled out years ago (originally almost anyone could get on). The poor and sick flocked to TN. I would imagine that could happen now as well in an expansion state (going the other way).

Tenncare (TN's Medicaid program) has abysmal reimbursement rates, even if these people got on Tenncare (or "Insure Tennessee", same network unless the plan has changed significantly) good luck finding a doctor to take them. Some people on Tenncare have been referred to specialists hundreds of miles away as the nearest doctor who is accepting new patients and takes Tenncare. (many of them have no car or money for gas to get there)

I encounter people all the time here in TN that are caught at less than FPL so not ACA subsidy eligible . I have a lot of sympathy for some of them, many of them have recently lost a job and this is a temporary situation yet on paper they have no income so no help for them without dependent children. Others, however, just don't want to have to file taxes because they are being paid under the table or whatever.

It is a sticky situation because there are some truly sick and needy falling through the cracks but also a lot of able-bodied adults seeking drugs.

That's probably what it is.

And pays 0% commission.

You're wrong Bob. The agent must pay $10 for each application submitted. The agent is also responsible for the first $2,500 in claims.

It's an awesome product and is very agent friendly. At least that's what my Assurant rep said.
