Release from IMO

I have heard people discuss getting a contract release from an IMO. If they are willing to provide a release what exactly is it? Is it a letter or a specific form from the company involved?

Usually it is a letter directly sent to the carrier...

Many (Americo for example) have a form that needs to be signed by the old and New IMO as the new IMO accepts the debt responsibility of the agent requesting the release.
