SEO for Insurance Websites

So is paid SEO pretty much taboo these days? It seems like the cheaper it is, the crumbier it is (you get what you pay for). How much time are you guys devoting to this? If you do pay for it, watch out and read the reviews of whoever you use.. I did some cheap stuff and my serps went down. Anyone having any recommendations or everyone just does their own?
Thanks!

I'd say if you want somebody good, ask for PROOF and lots of it.

I do SEO, Internet marketing, pay-per-click, etc., and have in one form or another for 17 years pretty much full time.

Yes you do want to know whether the person you're working with (hiring) knows what they're doing. For pretty much the first time in Internet history, it IS actually now possible to screw up a website's rankings by doing the wrong thing. Do a search for the term "negative seo" and see what all the uproar's about. Your competitors can actually screw up your website, and you can't do anything about it. Courtesy of our good friend Google.

That and listening to transfer man's advice

I kid you not -- these days it's hard for even the "experts" to know what to do. You have Google trying to conquer the world, with all their shenanigans, and then you have the "rumor mill". End result? You have to be careful what in the *ell anybody says. It's tricky.

Because so much of the current ranking problems deal with backlinks and what to do with them or how to use them, one interesting piece of advice I saw recently was to compare (or replicate) the backlink profiles of websites currently ranking at the top. While this kind of advice was around 10-12 years ago, applying it to current ranking situations might not be a bad idea. At least it should be safe, which is what everybody's concerned about.

Too bad in their pursuit of trying to mess up all business websites, Google sacrificed the one thing they were known for -- good, solid, relevant search results.

Everyone is mad because now nobody can make easy money off ignorant consumers anymore. In the past you could host a scam or crappy service put it on the first page of Google and people would sign up for it because it was "relevant". Now to get to the first page you have to be a legit business and actually have people talk about you (links) to be successful. OMG a business has to actually be good enough to recommend.... What is the world coming to???

I presume you're talking circa 2000? For the last eight or so years, I haven't found getting to the first page of Google THAT easy.

I'd go on to say you have to be a legit Fortune 500 business for Google to give you preferential ranking treatment.

Have you noticed that if you do a search for an insurance agent, you may get three EBay listings along with a Craigslist listing or two? I'm not kidding when I say Google's lost their edge. I call a spade a spade.

Hahaha why have they lost their edge? Because spammers like you can no longer make money using crap tactics and must now result to trying to market on insurance forums.....

One -- I don't do spamming.

Two -- I have historically used some of the best techniques out there and have correspondingly got the best results.

I earn a living at this stuff (Internet marketing & advertising) and can't fart around.

Do you sell bogus insurance? Probably not.

Wow! A lot of misinformation and conjecture on this thread.

First of all, while it may be nearly impossible to rank for insurance keywords nationally, it shouldn't be that tough for local sites.. I took an insurance agent here in Florida with no web presence at all to the top for both of his websites in almost no time at all.

What To Do:

1. Make sure your biz name, address and phone number is on every page ofyour site, possibly in the footer.

2. Use the exact same information along with a consistent businessdescription and claim your Google, Yahoo, and Bing sites.

3. Get a list of citation sites (local works great) and manually submit thesame info to all of them.

4. Find out what citations your competition has by typing his/her businessphone number into Google. Find those you don't have and submit your info.

5. Write articles for Ezine Articles and GoArticles, Wordpress.com blogs,Squidoo lenses, Hubpages etc. Add naked links to your site but also add your business info.

6. Make a YouTube video and add a naked link to your site as well as thebusiness info in the description.

7. Send tiered links to all these pages you have created using any SEOsoftware.

8. Watch your Google Plus page riseto the top seven and your organic listing to the first page.
