This California Law Is Ripping Away American Dreams. The Left Wants to Take It Nationwide

If the rules they're proposing went national, the insurance industry (and many others) would also be affected. Millions of businesses who offer contracting work to free citizens would be forced to make them w2 employees. That will have severe dire effects on all those business and the workers who agree to perform services for them.

Nope. Wrong. The won't be "forced" to go employee. They can spend a small amount of money and setup a business entity. I setup a business entity instead of going employee.

Let me break this down for you.

A worker goes out of his way to work for companies like Uber, Grubhub etc etc to work for them. The workers choose to inquiry about working for them.

They are presented with a compensation offer based on the work done. The offer isn't such a mystery that a high school educated person cannot understand it(I've read them).

After 20 years of investing, business consulting, and startup ventures, I am pretty good at understanding profit and costs, and I find the math confusing. It usually comes out to half or a third of what the companies claim, and less than minimum wage in many circumstances.

Could you please "break this down" for me?

Explain to me how you made the math work. How did you calculate the gas costs? Did you increase based on the assumption that there would be more stop and go driving? Did you factor in age and type of car, or just use a blanket number? Did you use actual mileage, or real reported mileage, or did you use the numbers the IRS is using? What about maintenance? Did you factor in type or age of vehicle, or are you using it as part of the mileage costs the IRS uses? All these number would be very different depending on which of my vehicles I were to use. Did you factor in time and gas used to drive to the "job"? Does the person get paid for that? Will it depend on the city? I would expect so. Driving is incredibly dangerous, one of the most dangerous things most Americans do, and Uber drivers aren't covered by work comp or health insurance. Did you factor in the cost of increased health insurance, and deductibles, or did you add the cost of purchasing work comp insurance or disability? Or did you just assign a dollar value to the increased cost of a debilitating injury based on how much additional risk they were taking on? If so, how did you do that? Did you use different math for food delivery versus rideshare as the risk of injury is much higher?

High school math you say?

There is a lot of other math involved that I don't understand, but you can "break this down" first, then you can explain the rest of the "high school math".

Gig workers score a victory in Pa. Supreme Court ruling on Uber drivers' unemployment benefits

Five years later, in a ruling hailed as a victory for workers in the ongoing struggle for gig workers' rights, the state's top court reversed that decision: Lowman, a majority of judges said, was not self-employed and should have been eligible for benefits.

The 5-2 decision sets the stage for app-based gig workers to get unemployment benefits and is part of a growing movement to get app-based gig workers protections they have not traditionally been entitled to.

The court decision will not automatically make app-based gig workers eligible for unemployment benefits, Simon-Mishel said, but if they are denied, it gives them strong legal ground to appeal and prove that they are entitled to them.

What may be missing in this conversation is the cash flow the government will pick up IF unemployment insurance is paid. It's always a money issue, follow the money.

The additional cost is passed on to the worker or the rider... cost goes up we eat it, and the powers to be get a larger purse. Not to mention a foot hold in this type of business for more opportunities to regulate.

You know, like public education that didn't work when schools were open, and now we can not get them open so they can fail to do what they are supposed to do... but... we continue to pay the taxes.

:laugh:... we sure are bunch of gullible sods aren't we.

Geez, this is so difficult for me. One the one hand I want less government, I want them out of our business.

On the other, I've met and talked to so many people that think they're being so clever and slick with their little side hustle that they are either unable or unwilling to understand, and are being completely taken advantage of.

I'm in such a conflict, because generally want to government out, but I don't want to see these people taken advantage of anymore. Arggg!

One thing that every business person needs to understand is once they punch out, they become the consumers that laws and regulations protect. If you deregulate business, you'll soon be paying $50/gallon for gas, and breathing in smog as well as getting food poisoning 3x a week.

I hate seeing you turn yourself inside out like a pretzel... on the the other had it is quite entertaining.

Maybe, people don't mind being taken advantage of (or what someone else may see as being taken advantage of), if they believe that its good for them. Just a thought. :)
