Using Family for Telemarketing

Why is everyone against family runned businesses?? People you can trust and if they share the same vision and passion to help people then this can be glorious. Believe in your blood! haha

I believe we are saying Hiring Family. That is different than having your brother as you partner.

The best advise I got was from the #1 WAMU agent for selling TSA annuities in the 80's. His son and I joined MetLife together and his Dad made millions in Annuity sales each year. I asked his Dad why didn't you bring him into the family business. His reply was simple. "If he lasts in this business for 5 Years, then he will have earned the opportunity"

He did not want to go through the pain of training his son and having to get past the feeling of entitlement. This is why most 2nd Generation Business owners fail in the family business. They don't have the work ethic for survival and must learn it.

Because no one can screw you over like family. And when things go bad, its not just business, but personal too.

Nothing like sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner with the person who just ruined your business and drove you into debt.

Just to clarify things, my son would have nothing to do with the business at all, that's a mutual feeling between him and I. He would just be answering some phone calls from those who are interested to set appointments. His forte is Human Computer Interaction, taking the human brain and computers and merging them together, such as robotics, which is probably the future of mankind. We are world's apart when it comes to careers.

You came here asking for advice and now it seems all you wanted was ratification.

Go ahead and do what you were going to do in the first place.

Back to your original question about using family for telemarketing, that is the bad idea. You're not asking him to "answer a few phone calls of people that are interested", you're asking him to go out and generate lay downs for you. That takes much more involvement then simply answering the phone.

I've yet to meet an engineer who would make a good telemarketer. Computer scientists are just another breed of engineers.

I'm the only family member that didn't work for my father's business.

Dad fired his wife not once, but twice (controlling, manipulative, and drove the office and sales staff absolutely crazy), fired his adopted son and daughter (daughter twice -- always arrived late and stole money), and fired his sister-in-law.

At least in his family, they obviously felt entitled to do as they pleased. Clearly they didn't know their place.

Thanks JD but ratification I get from the DOI. Just wanted feedback from those who did what I was thinking to do. I guess a lot depends on people's family relationships. My is great, and I thing that makes the difference!
