Vermont Going Universal?

In VT there are--essentially--two individual plans. One from BCBS and one from MVP (yes they are a health ins company, and have a pretty big presence in the North East, in fact one of the premier group carriers in Northern New England).

The two plans from BCBS and MVP are variants of endorsed programs from the state of VT. They are both crazy expensive even if your poor and they have varying premiums depending on income (actually it's a premium subsidy that brings the price down). If you are a small business owner here, who isn't in the market for group insurance, you are screwed.

The same is pretty much true of NY state. I remember a few years ago (when I was still in NY) I got a referral to a lady who wanted to purchase individual health insurance for her daughter who had recently moved to NYC. She was used to purchasing individual health insurance in (I believe) Indiana. I had to keep myself from laughing when she explained to me what she was looking for.

Oh also, no one in VT seems to care, because there are so few really small business owners. You step across the boarder into NH (where they have the highest smaller business owner per capita population in the entire country) and the rules are dramatically different. Still not quite as good as they are outside of New England, but most definitely the best you are going to find around here.

I still have some family in Vermont. It does seem that for a Medicare supplement for 65+; there is more choice.I checked the rates on Ritter, they didn't look that bad.Plan C is the same rate for everyone.Older smokers with health problems make out.

Med supp pricing is not impacted by the rules governing under 65 major med, especially when carriers are required to use community rating and GI.

If community rating applies to Med supps there is some impact on rates but not as drastic as with under 65 health.

Hear hear.

Health insurance in New York is crazy expensive compared to most other places I've seen rates for.

Grew up in Vt..now live 15 min south in Massachusetts.... and part of week in CT. Average income in Vt isn't 50,000 for anyone I know.

Still a long way to go on this. First the Exchange will be set up and the petition will be presented. A different Governor or House could change things.

Let's see what happens boys and girls.

A long way to go is an understatement. Both VT House and Senate agreed that none of the costs can be passed onto their residents due to the bad state of economic affairs. The only working model is to past the cost onto businesses.
