Vermont Going Universal?

Insurance News - Vermont Governor Poised to Sign 'Single-Payer' Street Guide - One signature away from having the first single payer state.

Actually one signature away from a study and a board to determine the viability of doing single payer in 2017, and figuring out how to fund it. Good luck, VT.

Quote from the article - "It does not create a single-payer system on its own, but establishes pilot projects and a board to determine benefits and criteria for a future system -- to be called Green Mountain Care -- that could be implemented in or before 2017, depending on waiver requests and potential revisions to the federal law. A five-member governing board, along with a director, will address structural issues, including how to finance a new system."

I bet Vermont will get a flood of new doctors into the state. It will be awesome to have some wise government official dictating the allowable charges!

Makes as much sense as having a wise Latino woman, uh, wise govt official dictating rates AND underwriting criteria AND loss ratio's to insurance carriers.

Is VT considered a "liberal" state? I thought it had a rather conservative political culture like Maine... unlike MA.

Anyway, single payer is the future... like it or not.

My bet is in mid 2013 the convoluted Obama plan will be scrapped for a Medicare-like single-payer system that the states can adopt or keep their own.

Sorry.

Al3 until this past election Maine has had a Dem controlled State House and Senate for 30+ years. The only way Maine can be considered Conservative is in Relation to another liberal state like California.

That's why I ran a young male rate. My son is healthy so I was just curious to see what the difference between states was for his age group. Ran a New York rate for a client once whose daughter moved to Manhattan (has crones disease, or however you spell that, uninsurable in GA). Her NY rate was around $1300 month, can't remember what the deductible was. Between that and the rent in NYC, hopefully she is making over $500K, but I doubt it.
Gotta jump in here, you caught my interest. I have a 17 year old with Crohns and insuring her is going to get ugly really fast come next Jan when she turns 18. We are in Florida, I am in marketing not sales and I work the Senior Market to top it all off. No clue what to do, but open to suggestions. An uninsurable 17 year old...unbelievable!

She should be able to keep the plan she has and spin off with her as the primary. Ask your agent or carrier. I have to help with that same thing a couple of times a year and never had an issue.

Wish that would work but we lost our group when Hubby got the axe for having a heart attack. So we had to put her on the kids program through the state b/c there were no other possibles.

It appears you are the only insurable parent. So, while she is still age 17 you should apply for individual/family insurance with your daughter as your dependent. She will be guarantee-issue, with no waiting period for the pre-existing conditon. Then, when she turns age 18, it will most likely be possible to spin her off onto her own plan when she becomes an adult (depends on what carrier you choose and what their rules are).
