Website Host - Unlimited Bandwidth?

With regards to website hosts...are there any out there that offer unlimited bandwidth?

What I'm looking for is a host that I can pay a flat monthly rate without having to worry about bandwidth usage. I don't anticipate any heavy volumes, but I'd like a flat rate plan if there exists such a thing.

Lastly, are there hosts that you can recommend that are 1) reasonable and 2) can customize canned cgi scripts for a nominal fee?

I use godaddy. I have the unlimited plan on a website with them. I pay like $12 a month. I've never had a problem with them.

No only do I host my websites with them, but I backup all my files on the ftp account.

Don't use go daddy for hosting. Most of their plans are limited which will do you no good if you intended on driving traffic to your website and their unlimited plan is a rip off at a $152 to 180 a year.

You can get quality web hosting with unlimited everything for $60 to $80 a year.

I've used several web hosting companies over the last decade for my own personal use and for my clients.

Here's a list of web hosting companies I reccommend to my clients and have tested for reliability.

Here's my $.02:

If you're not expecting too much traffic (less than a thousand visitors a day or so), you probably won't have to worry about bandwidth limits. Any quality host that offers unlimited bandwidth is going to be expensive, and probably find another way to limit you (Slicehost, for example, limits CPU cycles). They have to make money too, you know! If you're expecting enough traffic to worry about bandwidth limits, you're hopefully making enough $$$ off your website to pay for the extra bandwidth!

For cheap hosting, I've had decent results with Dreamhost ($10/month), though you don't want to host a moderate-traffic site here. For high quality hosting, I've had amazing results with Mosso ($100/month). You get what you pay for. Mosso can scale to huge traffic levels and will answer the phone on the first ring, Dreamhost chokes on moderate traffic and you'll never talk to a human.

If you need someone to customize a CGI script, turn to a developer, not your host (they're different businesses). You can probably find someone on elance that's reasonably priced.

Be careful with free web hosting offers because there's always a catch. Most of the time you get limited bandwith and diskspace. Which means you may run out of space to store your site or if your site becomes popular and reaches its bandwidth limit it will show as temporarily unavailable.
You may also be required to have ads on your website to keep the free account.

So if your serious about having a web presence do not use free hosting. Paid hosting is relatively cheap and usually runs under $100/yr with unlimted everything.

For those of you using godaddy for your web hosting. STOP! If it costs you under $12/mo it will also have limitations on bandwidth and diskspace. If you're paying $12 or more then your paying too much. You should only buy domains through them.

Check out my previous post for quallity website hosting providers.

I have sites at hostgator, bluehost, and dreamhost. While they all say unlimited there are always limits to something. The only 'unlimited' plan is if you get a server. Chances are you'll not approach their limits and if you do, it's easy to switch to a private server, which I have now.

If you have a small website and know that it will not consume too much space or bandwidth, then unlimited plans make your choices a bit easier to understand. Most plans that offer unlimited will have some restrictions such as no audio or video downloads. The reason audio or video downloads are typically not allowed in unlimited hosting plans is because these types of files consume significant bandwidth and disk space which exposes the host to the risk of having to add more hard drive space and bandwidth, which costs them more money. If you choose an unlimited plan and you know your needs won't be very intensive then you won't run into any problems.

If you intend to have a lot of visitors to your site, lots of downloads, including audio or video files, do not choose an unlimited plan hoping to get unrestricted bandwidth. You will find yourself with problems. Your web host is not going to run at a loss for long - they could shut down your website or even charge you extra .

The best course of action is to plan ahead. Calculate what type of bandwidth and disk space you will need for your site then multiply it by 2 just to allow for expansion. Remember, you can always buy more bandwidth or disk space if you need - often for only a few dollars a month extra. Look for plans that meet those requirements.

Only consider an unlimited hosting plan if you know your disk space and bandwidth requirements are very low. If, on the other hand, you have an ecommerce site or a site that you expect to grow in size and bandwidth in future, avoid any plans that offer unlimited bandwidth or disk space.
