I had my manager tell me I am writing too much business and quoting outside of 25 mile radius. Most of my business has been around 40-45 miles of the office. He said he wants me to pass on some possible business because it's too far! It makes me angry because I have 4 prospects this week that are about 45 miles away. Any options or thoughts of what I can do to change his mind? Does writing insurance business over 25 miles a bad idea? By the way I am selling commercial insurance. Thanks so much!

Are you with a manager that blocks of territories for their agents? If so, are you going into someone elses territories? If not, WTF?!

Is this for P&C business that would require someone to go out an document the case?

Even if that was the case I think its nuts someone wants you to pass on business because its beyond a certain amount of miles from the office...Whats up with your manager he should be encouraging your prospecting..please post back I'd love to hear more about your situation.

I'll trade you.
I do commercial P&C also.
My "manager" sent me on a 5 hour round trip journey for an appointment set up by a telemarketer that has given us nothing but bad leads/appointments. Add in that it was for a industry we really don't have a good product for....and it was around $2k in premium.
When I got face to face...the prospect told me he had the policy with his uncle and had no plans to move it.
Glad they pay my mileage.
It was a nice day for a drive and I got to listen to some cd's I haven't heard in a while. Also did some cold calling...so it wasn't a total waste of a day.

That's kinda odd. If you're selling life and health products, mangers expect you to go out 25-50 miles like it's no big deal. Sometimes it is and you end up with nothing more than less gas in your tank!
mjw.

Thanks for the replies. There are no Territories that we are assigned. There two other agents in the office we all sell business and some Group Health Insurance. He says we can't service them well because they are too far? The owner of the company is in his 80's so they have the old school mind I guess. So I am not sure what to do? I wrote several nice cases about 40 miles away around $10,000 in premium each for commercial. I am just upset that they are limiting the radius where I can sell. He said no more business over 25 miles. Please help!

Sounds like you are a go getter...You need to talk to them about the radius thing if you can't change their mind then you have 2 options scale back and sell only in the smaller radius or start looking at moving on.

Just got done talking with the Manager and Owner and they said no keep it in the 25 mile radius. Reasoning they said again is " you can't service the clients as well because they are too far," They said there is plenty of business near the office. Also this is the way they have done business for 40 years but i also they need business badly one of the other sale reps said. Thanks again everyone! They said we are happy with the leads you are bringing in closing but those businesses are just too far.

Ask him for some time and then show him your plan on servicing your clientele. If he's really worried about the customer service, show him that he has nothing to worry about. If it's something else, address that too.

You are a sales person, aren't you? Sell him the idea.

I don't know where you are...but...
I guess 25 miles is a lot if you're living in the horse and buggy age.
Half hour via car...a little over an hour by bicycle.
Add in those new fangled inventions like a phone and the interweb...
Service? You 're selling them insurance...not stopping by to mow their lawn every week.
I do the same lines and I only have 1 large customer within 25 miles.
