I still don't understand his reasoning, but agree with your decision to look at other options. You don't want anyone limiting you to what you can do. Especially when you have a system that's working.

Wanted to give an update. The owner says I have 60 days to move closer to work and that show that I am committed to the job. I live about an hour away right now and says that is way to far. And he keeps with the same bs need to write business within 25 miles of the office. I think I will be leaving the agency. He actually had a stack of apts. for rent on my desk this past fri. I have never been sick am writing more business than the other two agentss. How should I become independent in MI? I have my P&C life and health lic. Thanks

so wait... not only now, is he telling you that even tho you write more business than the other agents, you have to keep it witn a certain radius to the office.... he wants you to MOVE... so that you are closer to the office?!?!!

What happens if you tell him you're not able or willing to move. I really don't see how he can make you move, or why that is even relevant to your position?!

If I don't move I will not have a job with the company. The owner says if I move down there I will have more focus? Not sure why either. They also said they have had other agents that lived about an hour away and when they quit they don't keep many of the clients. I think a lot of this is for there control. I worked with a agent how was fired because he didn't move closer. They don't pay us milage so i don't see what the big deal is? I think that requiring you to move is an absolutely absurd request!! I don't even see where that comes into play, if you have a set shift that you work and you are on time to work, I don't understand how they can even request/require this?! I would def. look into the legality of this in your state.

Some people tend to think others oblivious or stupid to labor/employment laws, and think that the employees don't know or won't take the time to look into the laws of how a business is run. This is how my manager is at my regular job... he apparently thinks it's ok to tell me that he's going to smack my eyes into the back of my head.... yeah... well one, I would really like to see him try!! I promise he will pull back a stump! Two he apparently thinks that I think that it is ok for him to do this. Wonder how stupid he's gonna think I am after he has no job and a harassment lawsuit on his a$$!!!!

This explains everything, they only care about the 25 mile radius because their persistancy in keeping clients after the original agent leaves is terrible. First do you have a contract? If so read it especially non-compete / non-solicitation? Is it limited in radius? I wouldn't burn my bridges as I left but I would let them know when I dropped my zero day notice that I was leaving specifically over the absurd requirement that you move nd limiting your ability to work. Also meet with a lawyer, this *** sounds like the type that after essentially forcing you out the door might try to harm you ability to sell after you leave.

Didn't think about it, but that would make complete sense. BTW, Flora is right...it's limited what someone can require for a 1099 employee.

Thank you everyone! Basically I can't sell to my client's for 3 years after that free game. They also said they are having a hard time growing wonder why ha ha! The two other agents that have been there one for 3 years and one for 12 years. They have been going through about 2-3 agents a year. Thanks again

The question is this:
If you're successful despite them and foresee youreself leaving in the future, do you not want to leave now so the 3 years won't affect as many of your hard earned clients?
