52 hours is a lonnng time

Nope. It has to be recorded that you were there for the entire 52 hours for your state's pre-licensing requirements.
I get plenty of continuing education on the job, and find continue education courses pretty worthless. For the continuing education, I just bang through the tests as quickly as possible and spend about a fraction of the required time on there.

I did my pre-licensing in person. So, the online pre-licensing is different, they actually time it?

I wouldn't know as I also did live pre-licensing 16 years ago.

I have to *assume* that there's some kind of timing because there needs to be a 'certification' of the 52 hours of pre-licensing time.

I bet @Todd King would know more.
