Becoming a State Farm Agent

I'm also considering an SF agency and currently in the process of building a business proposal. Upon reading this forum, I think most recommend becoming an independent agent. What advise do you have about starting the process to becoming an IA?

Make sure you have the experience in insurance for at least 2 years before opening an independent agency on your own. I did 4 1/2 years before I felt ready. Knew enough about the industry itself plus how to talk with clients & explain coverage with good examples. I went scratch Indy in 03/2012. And am now at 1.2 million. Hiring the right sales people helped grow quickly.

Thanks for all the wisdom in these posts. Currently working as a SF team member right now and have been considering what my next step will be.

I've had some great training and have been producing well but have had hesitations in opening my own SF because of all the things I've seen, heard, and especially read here. I don't know much about the independent game so I'll finally ask my question.

Do you think you can adequately prepare yourself for starting an independent agency by working for a captive agency like SF? Or would I be better served in being an independent team member ?

Thanks.

I worked for State Farm as a team member for 4 1/2 years and then opened a scratch independent agency in March of 2012. Now an agency of 4 and at 1.5 million in premium. You can do it for sure.

Any recommendations on threads where I can find some good advice on starting an independent?

I don't think a thread is going to even come close to showing you how to run a successful ind ins. Agency. I reached out to an independent agent that was 7 years in on a scratch agency and picked his brain. He was in a complete other state so not competitors. I can't tell you how many google searches I did to learn how. Nothing teaches you how to do it. First step. Write a business plan that is at least 15 pages. Plan everything down to the last detail. After you get that done you will feel a thousand times better. You will have a working plan. You have to just decide to do it and leave no alternative. I mowed the yard and chanted each row for the first summer. "I will be successful I will succeed". I had concerns but I had a plan and the ability to explain insurance in a way that let people understand and make decisions to accept the policy. People do business with people who are prepared, successful, positive, confident. Frame it until you make it if you have to. Dream Plan Do. Don't miss any of those steps.
