California 18 Year Old Quote

I recently got a job offer of a life time to work in Los Angeles (Encino) as a game designer. Out of pure interest I decided to see what car insurance would be for me here, and was at the least shocked to see the premiums. All of the quotes, except MetLife ($450 a month), came in at about $500-600 a month for 100/300 bodily injury and property damage, $500 deductible on all and $5k for medical expenses on a modest 2011/2012 Toyota Camry. Mind you that even though I'm 18 I have.

Do these quotes seem right, or is insurance really this crazy in California! Coming from Michigan you could have 4 vehicles on one policy for about $2k a year.

Thanks!

Not sure who you got a quote from, but this seems very, very high.

You probably need to shop it with a California agent. If it's over $150 a month, tell them to go away.

Premiums in CA tend to be lower than comparable coverages in MI. Not always, but usually. My guess is you are comparing California oranges to Michigan Strawberries.

Thanks for the reply, I checked out State Farm, Allstate, Geico, Progressive, and Metlife. Online quotes only.

In Michigan only liability was required, but I always had full coverage 100/300k. Then again there were 4 vehicles so maybe additional vehicle discount, on top of that home owner's. Do you recommend any insurance company? I can always stop by different agents tomorrow.

I recommend you talk to Dan (djs) and let him give you a quote :)

don't know where you heard that, but that is way off base! Michigan ranks #1 nationally in highest auto insurance premium, largely due to the fact that they require unlimited lifetime medical benefits. They are the only state that does this.

I can promise you that the high quotes you got has nothing to do with moving to Cali. Your rates are jacked up for two major reasons:
1. you were most likely added on to your parents policy before, which is cheaper than going on your own.
2. while you may consider your car being "modest", insurance companies consider it a new car with an 18 yr old driving it.

Thanks for the reply! I did a quote in Michigan and it came to roughly 2k/year. Quite a bit less than California. And yes, I was on my parents plan, should have mentioned that! Nevertheless 4 vehicles for 2k even with me, and my sister on their policy seems a lot better than the amount I would be paying here.

That makes a huge difference.

Out of curiosity, why do you and your sister have four vehicles?
