EV Takes 4 Days to Charge

Ive seriously been considering buying one in the next 2 years. The majority of our household driving could be done by EV since its extremely rare for us to drive over 300 miles in a single day.... and the car can be charged in the garage each night.

My biggest complain after looking at the options is that it seems like all EVs want to be supercars and compete with the TeslaX.

I dont need a 600hp car with a 300 miles range.... I need a 300hp car with a 600 mile range... much more practical imo

I agree, that's a big issue. I think a big part of the problem is EVs aren't a cash saver vs ICE, so the market is people with $ to spare rather than practical shoppers. That market needs to feel like they're getting something awesome.

Im guessing maybe its a technology issue. Maybe to get the current range you need that much hp & torque? Id think they could sell the hell out of a 300hp car that looks decent and has a 600mile range.

Horsepower and torque have never been an issue with motors as they are exponentially more efficient, and pound for pound, more powerful than IC engines. The only real issues have been range and cost. And range isn't really an issue for the majority of drivers, as a full charge would give the equivalent of 4-5 days of typical usage.

Range is the #1 issue. Even me, who is a proponent of the technology, readily admits that.

If you take road trips throughout the year as most people in this country do.... it requires that you own 2 cars. Or at least for a family to own 1 EV and keep 1 IC.

If they had a 600mile range EV at a normal price point it would have a million person wait list for it.

5% of peoples driving is whats holding the market back from purchasing EVs. And its a valid concern up to a point.

Infrastructure

Sure, if you own a house and can afford quick chargers for all your household drivers you are good. If you live in a rented house, an apartment, a condo or many senior complexes, student housing, military bases, 10s of millions of Americans would be SOL.

Having to own a extra "got to get there" car or a truck seems to defeat the purpose.

Cart v Horse.

I do believe EVs are going to be the majority one day, just not to day.

The transition from horse and buggy to automobiles didn't occur in one day either, and there were many cursing cars for their noise and smoke and inability to handle typical roads back when. And yet here we are.
