Female Insurance Agents and Brokers

I'm not sure. Why do women seem to flock to being real estate agents but shy from insurance?

It is because real estate is about homes - something dear to a female's heart. Most homes are purchased by the wife, and female real estate agents can relate to them. I know, I know, all these are very sexist statements, but true nonetheless. As a previous poster said, being an independent commission only agent is very risky and most women shy away from it. Women especially stay away from group insurance that requires talking to businesses. I personally prefer group insurance, but that's not true of most women. I also agree that most women who have survived in this career do very well at it. If it weren't for the amount of money and the independence this provides me I would probably consider a different career. Heck, maybe in 2014 I'll be forced into a different carreer!

In my anecdotal experience, I have seen that aside from there being far more men than women in the insurance industry; that a bigger % of women agents are captive or do inside sales, as opposed to a smaller % of men. Why do you think it is about the industry, and being independent in the industry in particular, that is so appealing to men, and less so to women?

Of course, this is a generalization, and I am sure that we have men and women here who favor the other type of insurance career, but I am curious to hear if others find that this is the case, and why they thing it is.

Since it's been revived

I have worked at a broker office before I went independent, Heres what I see, Women have the potential to be top salesmen However most do not put the effort in or get too intimidated or complicate the process too much

The ones that don't fall into that category do extremely well And can close more deals with less effort, But the majority don't The few do

I do feel people buy easier from a woman And trust women easier, If most would just go with that there would be more women in the industry

I'm sure I'll get in trouble what what I am about to write, but I honestly don't really care that much.

Men and women aren't the same. They just aren't. Sure, some women are similar to some men, and there are always exceptions. I've met some women that are more like a man, and some men that are more like women. However, in general, my statement holds as anyone in the medical or psychiatric field will tell you, they are different.

I work in an office with mostly women. There are many many things that women, generally, do much better than men, especially when it comes to time management, organization, or empathy. Again, this is a gross generalization. I, like many men, do well with a small handful of large tasks to handle. I do very well using logic to write large accounts with business owners. My emotional intelligence, empathy, and tact in general, is very poor.

Again, gross generalizations.

Women are different than men. I believe they are superior in many, many ways. The ultra liberal movement to treat women exactly the same as men, and expect them to perform exactly the same way as men in a given scenario is I believe a huge obstacle to the progress of women, not an asset.

There, I said it. I'm sure I'm going to get in a lot of trouble now.
