OK I emailed this to my friend (see first post of this thread) who is also pretty darn good at getting websites to show up and this is what he sent me back. Would someone here who is smart care to clarify just what the heck is going on and is what my friend saying correct?

HERE IS WHAT HE SAID:

Whoa!!! (Don't do that!)

Google, as well as all the other search engines do not just read the anchor text and automatically assume that just because it says 'insurance agent' and it's a link to your site that you are automatically an insurance agent which should be ranked higher in the results. They do that too, but...

Google also takes into consideration the rank, reputation, and overall gist of the site linking to you. This means that the little automated link building tool up there will simply get your site with the anchor text out there. They show up every day in my spam filter on my site with about 300 other links with anchor text - where do you think those come from? Automated systems like that one - that's where. You don't know where your site will end up. You wanna take that chance? I won't. Your link could be stuck in the middle of 100 links selling viagra - is that where you want to be?

Do it if you want to, guys, but I will say this one more time:

DO NOT AUTOMATE ANYTHING!

Google's smarter than that. If you don't think so go ahead. It used to just be the number of links would rank your site higher - it is now the quality of backlinks which carry more weight. Random links can actually drag your rank down.

Ok,

This tool WILL NOT hurt your rankings. If you went to 300 websites to check various rankings, why would that hurt your site? Like Jeremy said, this tool is great for getting a new site indexed, thats about it...

Just as a test I hit a landing page with this today that has not had any other link building done at all, going to see what it does to it.

I understand why there is much disagreement on this topic. because google themselves talk out of both sides of their mouth!

they say things like "dont use automated linkbuilding tools, linkfarms, etc.". but on the other hand I've heard google's Matt Cutts say in a video "we don't penalize for bad links because a webmaster has no control over who links to their site".

so if google can't give us a straight answer, who can?

Matt Cutts is a dirty liar.

He says things that are proven incorrect every time he makes a video.

They can't penalize for bad links. If they do all the black hat seo people will just flood other people's site with bad links then get them delisted.

Matt Cutts honestly comes out in videos a LOT and says that they just started penalizing something and I know people that say they immediately start doing exactly what he said more, because that means that a lot of people will believe they're penalizing it, but they didn't really do anything, and it becomes a BETTER seo strategy because it isn't being used by everyone that listens to Matt Cutts.

In general, bots are not as good as people. Most websites like that are just bots. You're just annoying other websites with your spam. It's better to actually find someone to do the linking for you that understands rank and back-linking. Just my two cents.
