Joe,
The way I calculate my % is important to me based on the way my contract works. If I write enough subscribers I get to a higher commission level. I know for every $1 in leads I spend I make $5 in commission during the first year (assuming they keep the policy one year).
It's hard to figure out what leads will do for you since it's all based on your personal touch. I may make $5 for every $1 in leads, someone else may do better, someone else may do worse. I have learned that you, your work ethic, ability to not take "no" personally, and persistancy are the most important variables in determining if you make it in sales (any type for that matter).
It also hit me awhile ago that it's not the best closer, the best presenter, or even the most knowledgeable but the person who sticks around in the industry that will does well long term.
You will have to determine your own numbers and use that to calculate some % return or dollars spent/dollars made (much more important).
Good luck
