If I Am with EFES...

Can I have a contract with a company that EFES does not have a relationship with?

On EFES website, it doesn't look like American Memorial is a carrier that is on their lists of carrier. If I am with EFES, can I get a contract with Am Mem on my own?

Depending on the group you are with you can have contracts with other companies, but you cannot use them to write their leads as they will have an issue with it, just like any company that provides leads would. They have plenty of carriers that you should have no trouble placing business.

So I'm clear...

When with EFES, I have two agent writing numbers. One number that I use when I write with leads from Equita. I can only use companies that have relationships with EFES with these leads.

Another writing number when I develop leads myself. I can use any company with this lead and with this writing number.

Do I have that correct?

Again, it all depends on the Manager and how they feel about it. That being said, yes you typically have 2 numbers, 1 retail to write the leads on, and 1 wholesale to write your own leads you generate, ie your own previous book etc. If you create the lead you should be able to place them wherever you see fit. Equita has Monumental, Foresters, Americo, AmAm, RNA and a few others, if you can't place them with those companies, there may be an issue. The wholesale contract is often 15 to 20 pts higher.

If you decide to go the Equita route, I would contact Travis Tubbs ( HOOSIERDADDY on the forum) He is an RD with Equita and great to work with. His group nalso have many of the top agents within Equita.

I assume this would affect your lead costs.

On the wholesale side you generate your own leads, so obviously it will affect the cost. On the retail side the lead cost is all based on production regardless of what contract level you happen to be at. If you are like Jdeasy you pay around $11, and most agents are somewhere in the high teens.

I am with EFES and I have contracts outside of the EFES umbrella. I rarely have a need to use anything not under them, but it does come up occasionally. Less nw that it used to. Before they had AmCon I used 5 Star to place my difficult cases.

But, most of the time I used 5 Star I had already tried to use one of the EFES companies and it was declined.

What you cannot do, and should not do, is use an EFES lead to write outside business. That is just simply wrong. There is no gray area there.

No, it would not have affect on your lead costs at all if use your wholesale number. It's not a lead that counts towards your PPL, {production per lead}, and the premium is not counted towards it either. It doesn't help your PPL nor hurt it.

I made a decision sometime back after I figured out the PPL stuff, it does take a while to understand it, to use only my retail number for all business. That means I take a 10% pay cut on all my self generated business in order for it to count towards my PPL.

I would rather pay less for leads every week than to make an extra 10% here and there on an application. By doing that I have paid $11 or less per lead for over 2 and a half years now.

Tim W. did the same thing when he was with EFES. They don't require that, it's a personal decision. In fact, my manager has encouraged me several times to submit self generated business on my wholesale number.

Good stuff, thanks JD

Like the advise to use the retail number on all apps. I'm very early in this homework phase of EFES. I have dug a little into how the PPL works out and it makes sense the use it on all even with the commission knock.
