32 Bits of Wisdom from William Clement Stone

Some background for those too young to know who he is.

He was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 4, 1902. His father died in 1905 leaving his family in debt. In 1908 he hawked newspapers on the South Side of Chicago while his mother worked as a dressmaker. By 1915 he owned his own newsstand.

In 1919, Stone built the Combined Insurance Company of America, which provided both accident and health insurance coverage; by 1930, he had over 1000 agents

He mentored Og Mandino, an alcoholic who became the publisher of Success Magazine.

Stone associated with Napoleon Hill to teach the Philosophy of Personal Achievement "Science of Success" course. Stone wrote: "One of the most important days in my life was the day I began to read Think and Grow Rich in 1937.[5][6] Stone said that the Bible was "the world's greatest self-help book"

That guy was a go getter and "NO" wasn't a vocabulary word he used much. Some of these college grads would do well to read up on more folks like him.

I know we are supposed to say it is hard and it takes magic dust or super special leads or being with The A Team. But compared to the old black and white days current FE is like the ATM machine of Life Insurance. SI and Non Med Traditional is close behind. That is why as I slow down to just easy low-hanging fruit my focus is going to be SI insurance. It really is crazy simple and not that hard if like me you have a book. Lazyman Insurance 101

One thing that has remained constant = Work ethic.

I would hate to be a trainer (Adult Daycare) today.

Quick rendition.

1st approach:
Hello, my name is "LifeHawk", I'm with Family Heritage and I'm talking with all the folks in your neighborhood about Cancer. I just have a few minutes (I always said a few seconds) and I wanted to stop by and catch up with you too (motion inside, do you have a spot we can sit down, wipe off feet, and begin to move in).

2nd approach (if they hesitate or give an excuse):
Like I said my name is "LifeHawk", I'm with Family Heritage and I've been speaking with all your neighbors about Cancer. I've had an opportunity to meet (begin to show them your pre-approach pad, which was a map drawn on gird paper with the names of everyone you had spoken to in the neighbor hood). I spoke with Harry and Mildred (pointing at the name and location on the map) he's the one with the bass for a mailbox, (add in a few more)... and I wanted to catch you too, do you have a place we can sit down (wipe feet and move to the door).

3rd approach:
Much like above, but the question was asked (normal saved for the formal presentation) "Who is the closet person to you that has had to battle cancer?"

That's a 1000 foot flyover, but key to this sort of approach was the emotional response that the word cancer creates and causes most people to pause and listen.
On the cancer, I have had some personalized "Seven Warning Signs of Cancer" printed up . I like using giveaways, at NL&A it was needle packs but not many sew any more. I tell them, "we are talking with folks in the area about cancer and I would like to give you this booklet that might save your or a loved ones life someday.. Have you ever known of someone that has had cancer? (always yes).. That gets the conversation started.

Some of the hardest working agents I have known have known what it was like to be hungry and or to have to sweat to eat. With or without a High School diploma.

Nothing like a long hard week of knocking doors, being blown off porches, presentations with no decisions and ending up blanking the week! If you need a definition of a man, it's the guy who can take knocks like that and get up day one of the very next week and find himself in the field doing it again.

Education isn't really a factor, it's a willingness to learn and a bullheaded, bulldog tenacity that just won't say "Uncle".

Funny, that's just a great recipe for life in general... no mater what you call your profession.

If you really want to pull out a story and get them engrossed in the possibility of them getting it themselves, add this to the mix. When they say "Yes" follow up with, "Tell me a little abut that." Pause and wait for them to tell the story. As they do, they take a trip down memory lane that leaves them with a very important impression, before you make a pitch.

People often need a "why" to purchase. It can't be our "why" it has to be their own. Throw in some "how does that or did that make you feel" and you have an emotional path to a sale.

Any wonder why I sale more women than men?

Oh man, you hit the nail on the head. Me at 24, with zero sales experience was just tossed into it. "Say something like this, make it your own, go kill it". My first month I did as you could imagine, subpar.

But what do I possess? An immense amount of personal responsibility, courage and fortitude. I walked and knocked until almost 8pm some nights, telling myself "this next one is it, and if not, I'm just one no closer to a yes". I always saw the big picture. Don't take the beatings at the door personal, because it's not. They tell you to eff off, great, quicker they shut me down the quicker I can move on to another house.

I agree, that it certainly separates the men from the boys.
