Which carriers do you recommend for someone new to the industry?

There are many that are available to you. In no particular order, here are some examples of FE carriers: Transamerica, Liberty Banker's, Oxford, LifeShield, Security National, Trinity/Family Life, KSKJ, RNA, Foresters, UHL, American Amicable, Americo, Great Western, Mutual of Omaha, Prosperity, Sentinel Security, Baltimore Life, and probably a few more that I'm leaving out. The point is, don't let it stop you from changing IMOs. Plenty of companies to go around. You may not have access to your "favorite" for 6 months, but at least you'll have something in the interim.
