Rouse -- when you're considering a cold door-knock session again, I'd love the opportunity to ride-along. Cold door-knocking is irrationally difficult for me, and I'd bet if I saw a pro do it in action, I'd get over the fear immediately.

Yes, Ive heard of her on 1 of the EFES calls or sumthing...congrats to her!! No saying I could never do it, but being this new, NOPE, not for me right now!! Maybe it would be diff if I also weren't new to insurance.

The thing with door knocking is that its like the old saying where you give a man a fish, you feed him for today.....teach him how to fish and you feed him for life.

Leads are useful, but I don't understand your logic. If you don't have too much money for leads, and you are new to the market then generating your own leads through going d2d makes complete sense.

There is unlimited prospects, virtually no cost and anything that you sell will be clear profit. If you are NERVOUS about it then good. Thats the way it should be...........its the best learning enviroment.

My advice is to forget the leads. Teach yourself/learn to "fish". Make mistakes, fail forward and never be without prospects again.

I remember lots of health guys a few years ago saying leads were the best thing going...you buy leads, put them into leadpod, have a fancy norvax, crm etc etc. Where are they today? Most are dead in the water. Why? They never learned to "fish" and in the end the model collapsed.

Anyway, time to get off my soap box!
 
I'm with you on that. My hats off to the doorknockers, but it ain't for me and will never be.

I will doorknock the leads that don't have a phone number or I can't find a number for them. I hate to do that. I would never colddoor knock.

There may be a people making a living colddoorknocking for FE and, if there is, more power to them. I know of one lady that doesn't get leads and doorknocks for FE on the southside of Chicago. She is a black lady and targets the black neighborhoods. She does very well in this business.

If they said that was how we had to do this from now on, I would get into another field. :err:

JD: There are times that I absolutely hate canvassing but that was what I was taught to do when I first started on the debit with NL&A. I had a staff manager that set a goal of a minimum of $1000AP per week (that's the equivalent of $5500 today). This was in a time when we were still selling Industrial weekly premium insurance for as little as 10 cents per week so $1000AP was a big deal. I didn't sell much Industrial but I would say the average sale was around arond $20,00 per month or $240 AP. If an agent didn't have people to see, then he insisted on canvassing all day. I always try to make sure I had a lot of folks to see when he showed up so I wouldn't have to canvass but still ended up to my fair share. Actually, the hardest call to make each day is the first one.. Once you force your self to make it, it gets easier as the day goes by. .. Louis

Xs 2. I will or have knock on an orphan. But you guys that park, walk and knock have my props.

Wino: Some do it that way but I was taught not to park and walk. We would knock a door and then go a couple of blocks down the road and knock another. My mgr. said we didn't want to appear to be door salesman like the Jewel T or Fuller Brush guys (even though some of those guys were the true professional salesmen) The exception would be when someone gave us a referral (name) of the person living next door.

You are so correct with regard to that. Even though I am use to calling everyday I still hesitate with the first call because I hate talking to unfriendly people. I can care less about the no's but if they happen to want to get ugly with me then it is my tendency to smart back. I am working on that and trying to warm them up and get an appointment. I am getting better.

How in the world do debit agents make a living today. I applied for a local position here in Baton Rouge last year and top pay was $35K/year, spending my gas visiting approx. 400 people a month and even using my stamps to mail bills out. I was shocked.

Who was that with? Was that just the base pay for collecting the debit or did that include their sales commission?

The thing I can't hardly make myself do is cold call on the telephone. I tried buying a list a couple of times, hated it so bad I quit even though I made some very good money doing it.

Simple. They don't know what they don't know.

Debit agents = Employee mentality
Independent agents = Business owner mentality

Its funny, my mother in-law is a debit agent. Has been for 12 years now...she does the same thing's I do daily but makes a fraction of the income I make.......they love their "employee" benefits.

I have never understood it.

When you are uninsurable, those "employee benefits" look pretty good.
