State GOP leaders look at way to trim Medicaid costs

This might not really effect any producing agents but it just goes to show how F-up the health care reform is.

The state of Texas is thinking about pulling out of Medicaid.
Florida is thinking about the issue also.

The article references an HMO type model for Medicaid people. I think its a great idea if nothing else.

I would love to see medicaid dropped. The people that get on the plan never get off. I get 3-4 calls every month from this category of people and they say "what do you mean I have to pay the premium" "What do you mean I have to pay for medical care"

Its one thing if your a single Mom that is using that benefit temporary which is what it was intended for. It entirely another if you are 5th generation Medicaid.

I guess that's one way around having more of the financial responsibility dumped on you as a state. That would be awesome.

Most States are already in the red, and now Obamacare pushes even more cost onto the States.

This is one of the grounds for the state lawsuits challenging the health care law - that it illegally increases what states have to pay out it Medicaid by making more people eligible.

I was under the impression states are required to offer Medicaid. Didn't know you could opt out just like you can't opt out of SS (at least not any more).

Lines like this always send me through the roof.

What if states allowed the poor to just take their federal subsidy and buy something on the exchange, on the federal government's dime?

The govt doesn't have any money, except what they take from us, borrow from China or just decide to print.

States are not required to offer Medicaid. It's an opt-in program.

Medicaid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"State participation in Medicaid is voluntary; however, all states have participated since 1982 when Arizona formed its Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) program. In some states Medicaid is subcontracted to private health insurance companies, while other states pay providers (i.e., doctors, clinics and hospitals) directly."

GA had (or has) an HMO Medicaid program and it was nothing but problems. Docs & pharmacies were not getting paid and stopped taking patients. It was taking months to get reimbursement.

I don't know if it is still around or not since I earn too much to qualify.

Of course with coming commission cuts that might all change . . .

actually almost everything the feds do is an opt- in deal

they dangle money. you want the money? you follow their rules.

simple.

and effective.

I don't care if this sounds like a socialist comment or not - but one of the key responsibilities for any government is to provide basic safety nets.

People who don't need assistance tend to view those who do as lazy and stupid. A small percentage might be but most are victims of "life."

No one should be homeless. No one should go hungry. No one should be left to die because they're sick and we decided we can't make a profit off them.
