The Door Knock Life

Why? D2D guys are in my neighborhood all the time. Pest control, tree trimmers, alarm companies, roofers, you name it! (Oh, and the JW's!) It's actually illegal in my town without a solicitor's license (which, by the way, is apparently not required for state licensees such as insurance agents). But most people just ignore them if they don't want to talk to them, unless they're a "Karen".

I'm in a middle class neighborhood. In the last 10 yrs I've seen maybe 3 guys going door to door . I bet I've been knocked maybe 2 times last 5 yrs . I'm on next door app all the time with 56 nearby neighborhoods. I've read so many times the shock of people seeing people going door to door and calling the police .

What is your "typical" sale? Product, market, etc.

My approach has three questions: one related to mortgage protection, one related to debt elimination, and the last related taxes. If I am talking to someone who doesn't see a need to have their mortgage payments/balance taken care of if they die, doesn't feel that debt is a problem for them, and likes paying taxes, I move to the next door.

The insuranceproshop's "Close 9 out of 10" and "Found Money Management" programs have shaped a lot of what I do, as has Van Mueller and Tom Love. I'm sure @DHK would be able to come along and post some helpful videos for us. I ask questions that help folks realize that there are problems they may not have thought they had, and once they say "what can I do about it though - I can't afford to do anything more than I'm already doing" we are ready to meet.

I am always trying to make a life insurance sale, preferring participating whole life and convertible term with a plan to convert it. But I have sold FE and plain cheap term as well.

You have your note pad . Are you making appts for later?

Yes. At first I tried to get in then and there but then it took away from prospecting. So now I am there to get a lead or a meeting (prefer meetings).

Any 1 knock closes with middle class?

Yes, but I really do try to set a fact finding meeting and develop a comprehensive solution. But once in a while I knock and they say we were just talking about getting some life insurance and those usually turn into term or FE cases and I will write them up if they insist.

Around my area if a guy was going down the road knocking middle class somebody would call the police? Police ever harassed you or questioned what your doing ?

Where the heck do yo live lol

I have had the police called on me once and I left that neighborhood rather than sticking around to see if the homeowner was bluffing.

One time I had one neighbor who I had not yet knocked drive up to me while working his neighborhood and ask me who I was and what was I doing in their neighborhood. Thankfully I had already spoken with a few neighbors and I said I was here meeting with Ted and Alice right there at 237 Mazersky Drive and Bob and Carol right across the street. Since I was already out here and its such a nice day I thought I'd introduce myself to you and the other neighbors because I like working with friendly nice people like you.

I have knocked four hours a day just about six days a week for over two months now ... during that time I have met with pest control knockers, frozen meat knockers, Cable/TV/Internet knockers, home improvement knockers, solar knockers, water treatment knockers, lawn care knockers and two Keller Williams real estate agents out knocking ... We usually agree to divide a street or streets that day so that none of the homeowners is getting knocked by both of us back to back on the same day.

I know you won't believe me, but your fear of the "middle class" is all your own making. People are generally courteous if not outright friendly. I get a few doors closed on me abruptly but then that's that and I'm off to the next door. Most folks, if you speak slowly (but not too slowly) and use verbal, para-verbal, and non-verbal communication to your advantage, will give you more of an audience than you at present believe they will give you.

I know almost everyone in my development and have enough old people that will 100% call the cops on someone trying to go house to house.

No, they won't. At least, they won't call them on me. Unless you guys live in the most unfriendly, crime infested "middle class" neighborhoods in the country, you are judging your neighbors wrong, imo.

I would, however, call the cops on @DonP for sure ;)

I just noticed you're in AZ. I used to live in Phoenix. My wife and all 3 of my sons were born there. When it's hitting 115° and higher, I'd call the cops, too, 'cos that guy knocking doors is obviously insane and might be dangerous!:twitchy:

(I know some of you are tempted to think "but it's a dry heat". Just stop. You don't know what you don't know!)

spend two years in Vegas... Dry heat is hot!... The heat in an air fryer is "dry heat" but will cook a chicken and the heat in the desert will cook an agent. :wideeyed:

Let me tell you what would have people calling the police:

1. Are you trying the door knob to see if the door opens?
2. Are you looking inside the windows? I don't care if there are no blinds or not.
3. Are you too close to the door after you knock?
4. Are you wearing or holding anything that can make you look 'official'? A clipboard, a lanyard, and a logo'd shirt are helpful.
5. Are you touching or rearranging any packages at the door?

You never know who is watching at any time.

Even as a Mormon missionary, I had the police called on us ONCE in East TN. One time. That's it.

Never had the police called any other time and certainly not in SoCal. (Our police have more important matters to deal with.)

If they are called, I would be prepared with a copy of my insurance license, my ID, and my state Department of Insurance bulletin declaring insurance to be an essential business.

Now, there is another factor: ethnicity.

Yes, I'm 'white'. And with that, has its own 'privilege' that I can appear to be trustworthy and not necessarily up to no good.

Other ethnicities... don't necessarily have that. That's one reason why it's generally more difficult for Hispanics and Blacks to succeed at Edward Jones (the door-knocking company). Certainly not impossible, but it's more difficult. For them, I recommend always dressing very professionally - a suit - and having impeccable English.

Oh, and hide all your tattoos. Sure people shouldn't judge you based on tattoos... but let me give you a clue:

They do.

And if you want every edge on your side, hide them. :)

What part of East TN?

I wear light blue polos and khaki's, shirt tucked in with a brown belt to keep the pants where they belong, and comfortable hiking boots. It feels right and people generally respond well to me.

I believe dressing up would cause fewer people to answer the door. Around here, if a man knocks your door wearing a tie, he is likely selling religion.

This is the exact shirt I wear ... sky blue ... I bought three so I can go a few days without showering ... er ... doing the laundry ...
