I just used the FE mailer Chris said had the best response rate and was very happy with the result.

Let me clarify.

I am new to direct mail. I am currently selling annuities. I have never sold FE though.
I talked to Chris at TLC and explained that, and he thought it best to start with a annuity mailer.

I know some people are having great success with FE though.

I have not heard good news on annuity mailers. What kind of return did he mention?

Nothing wrong with it if you want to put a client in a WAY overpriced policy that's begging to be replaced.

Or pay out the arse for leads that are not necessarily new...

I've been working with Asurea as an independent, and buying my leads from them. I like their lead program a lot. I feel that there are no 'good' or 'bad' leads, but from the standpoint of returns, there are good and bad areas to work. I order my leads by zip code, and the returns have been consistent in both area and in numbers.

So far I have received 5 leads from monumental lead program.

they trickle in 1 a day....

In the past using an independendent mail house I typically get 15 to 20 returned.
