Web Hosting Question

Thank you all for your kind responses

Few more questions ..

Is it better when selecting a Web hosting plan to go with the 3yr plan or just the 1 yr plan. The 3yr plans are much cheaper but what if their service is substandard with large server down times and inferior customer support.

How much matter will fit in a 10GB space so to speak so that I'll have an idea of what I need, is it just the matter of typing the info. and checking the file size in windows or is there more to it.

Regards.

I think the 1 yr plan will be your best bet with most hosts unless you are very familiar and like the operation. The competition gets steeper by the minute which does drive costs down. A year will give you plenty of time to get a feel of whichever hosting co. you choose.

Take it with a grain of salt, but 1&1 has a sweet deal going on right now. Their CS is lacking, but it is just as good a place to start as any.

I've been using hostgator for 5 years+ and have only had one problem with them that wasn't solved within 15min. I actually have the resellers account and it's only $25 a month.

I have a bunch of different servers with a bunch of different Internet Providers (I trust no one completely), and have done this since 1998.

Godaddy.com has been the most pleasant experience and their prices are fair. You can start at $50 per year and work up. A virtual dedicated server is just over $300 per year (which is what I use).

10 gig is a lot of bandwidth for a new site - unless you are letter people download big files like videos.

inmotion hosting is very good. They also have the fastest east coast server I have ever seen. A 10 meg file downloaded to my house in TN in less than 3 seconds. woorank and sitegrader claim my website is faster than 97% of websites or some crazy %.

They also staff their tech call in line with people who will actually do things and speak english.

Avoid Justhost like the plague, they wouldn't deal with issues where servers got banned by security systems for email spam issues, their CS department wouldn't respond to password reset requests, or to release my domain for almost 2 weeks.

Re: Web Hosting Question ..!

Don't focus on price, focus on customer service...Zillions of hosting companies out there that offer everything for a minimal price, but what matters is when their servers go down how they treat their clients...

Customer service is definitely at the top of the list when considering a web hosting company. I've used Yahoo and sometimes I have to wait an hour to talk to someone!! Now I use GoDaddy and haven't had any issues.

I've used hostmonster.com for the last few years and love them. They have unlimited bandwidth and I only paid $5/month when I paid for 3 yrs upfront. Here's the reasons I like them:

  • 24/7 live customer support
  • Customer support is in Utah, not india
  • I've never waited more than 1 minute to speak to a real person
  • Simple Scripts - 1 button to install many scripts like WP, chat, forums, etc.
  • Unlimited domains for the same price
I'm not affiliated with them at all, I've just been very impressed with them. I'm sure there are plenty of other hosting companies that are just as good, I just really like the fact that this company is 30 minutes from my house so if anything ever goes wrong I can yell at someone in person.

First off, there is no BEST web host, although many of them are really good.

I would choose based on customer support. Everything else is almost unimportant. Space, bandwidth, etc is almost irrelevant unless you will be getting a ton of traffic.

Listen to the recommendations of others as far as customer support is concerned. I recommend HostGator. I love their live chat support. They always solve my problems quickly.

So that is what I would look for... great customer support.

Well, I am glad I stumbled onto this thread. I too am looking at starting a site and am amazed at the competition out there for web hosting. This thread has definately enlightened me. I do have a few questions though.

I have noticed a few people on this forum who build only web sites for insurance purposes. Does this really matter when making a decision?

I was refered by a friend to www.homepageuniverse.com
Anyone ever used these folks?

Here is a vague question, what does the host company do? What I mean is I want to be able to get onto the site and add/change things on a normal basis, even though at the current time, I'm not sure I even know how to do that. Is this something that is easily done?
